Sydney Pickrem Takes Down Canadian Record in 200 IM on Final Night of Trials
The final evening of the 2017 Canadian Swimming Trials featured a new Canadian record from Sydney Pickrem in the final women’s event of the meet. Pickrem, an Olympic finalist in the 200 IM, became the first Canadian woman to ever break 2:10 in the event.
The night capped off an impressive week for the Canadian women. No one qualified for the World Championships team in the 200 fly, but that turned out to be the only women’s event where no swimmer achieved the FINA “A” cut.
The men’s meet was not quite as prolific, but six men ended up achieving FINA “A” standards in their respective events.
Read below for full coverage of the eight events to be contested on night four.
Women’s 800 free
Mackenzie Padington, already on the World Champs team in the 400 free, picked up another national title and another race in Budapest when she finished first in the 800 free. Padington finished in 8:31.68 to drop some 20 seconds from her lifetime best and move to tenth in the world this year.
Well back in second was Olivia Anderson, but she did manage to get inside the FINA “A” cut of 8:38.56, clocking 8:37.12 to add her name to Canada’s female-heavy roster headed to Budapest.
Danica Ludlow finished third in 8:47.29, and the remainder of the top eight included Caitlin Hodge (8:49.46), Molly Gowans (8:51.59), Stephanie Horner (8:51.99), Marit Anderson (8:55.98) and Meryn McCann (8:58.00).

Women’s 200 fly
Already qualified for the World Championships in the 200 free and 100 fly, Katerine Savard could not swim fast enough to add a third event to a Budapest program, but she did win the national title comfortably, touching in 2:12.47. She faded down the stretch but was still able to hold off teenagers Mabel Zavaros and Victoria Kwan.
Kwan actually ran down Zavaros on the last 50 and got the touch, 2:13.58 to 2:13.59, but both will qualify for the World Junior Championships this summer.
Jacomie Strydom took fourth in 2:15.28, and rounding out the field were Maggie MacNeil (2:16.28), Sophie Marois (2:17.47) and Jessie Gibson (2:17.92). Danielle D’Aoust was disqualified.

Hedlin finished under the FINA “A” cut of 15:12.79, but he may not end up competing in the event at the World Championships, as he is already qualified for Budapest in the 5k open water event.
Venezuelan Rafael Davila had the second-fastest time of the meet, finishing in 15:22.23, while Canadians Peter Brothers (15:35.23) and Jon McKay (15:38.39) were the next-two domestic finishers.
