Martin Zubero on The Morning Swim Show

March 26, 2013: One of the fastest backstrokers in history, Martin Zubero, joins today's edition of The Morning Swim Show, looking back on his college career at the University of Florida. Zubero swam the fastest 200-yard backstroke in history at the 1991 NCAA championships, the final meet where backstrokers had to touch the wall with their hands before each turn. He talks about that record swim, and how he used the new backstroke turn rules that summer to break the world record in the long course version. The 1991 NCAAs was momentous for Zubero not just for the 200 back , but for ending David Wharton’s 200 IM streak, an event that he did not expect to win. He talks about how he was able to pull off the win and use the energy from that win to swim well the remainder of the meet. His success in 1991 segued to the 1992 Olympics, where Zubero won the gold in the 200 back in his home country (though he was born in the United States).
