The final meet in the USA Swimming Grand Prix series starts this afternoon in Santa Clara, California, with the men’s 800 free and the women’s 1500 free. Ryan Cochrane will be the headliner in the men’s race, having won silver in the event at the world championships last summer. But Korea’s Tae Hwan Park will also be in the mix, as will Australia’s Ryan Napoleon and Michael Klueh of the United States. Lauren Boyle, a New Zealand Olympian and a former standout for the California Golden Bears, will be the one to watch in the women’s mile. The United States women’s water polo team breezed through their final preliminary match today in the FINA World League Super Final, beating Germany 17-3. Now, they head to the quarterfinals against Italy tomorrow in their quest to win their fourth straight Super Final gold medal. Two cities have publicly expressed an interest in hosting the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Officials in Greensboro, North Carolina, have been weighing the options since opening their new aquatic center and multi-sport complex earlier this year, and according to an article published today in the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Florida, is in the hunt as well. The Veterans Memorial Arena, which would have the same amount of spectator seating as the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, would be the facility for the meet in Jacksonville, and Greensboro would host the meet in the main arena of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, with the current aquatic center nearby a place for athletes to warm up and practice. The interested cities will officially present their bids to USA Swimming later this year.
