2018 NCSA Championships: Willie Davis Wins Twice; Claire Tuggle, Isabelle Stadden Shine on Night Four (Race Videos)

After four full days of competition at the 2018 NCSA Championships, Nation’s Capital leads the combined team scores with 1921 points, followed by Marlins of Raleigh (956), Aquajets (906), Academy Bullets (804.5) and Nova of Virginia (682). A number of youngsters swam their way to the top of the podium tonight.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

A pair of 15 year olds topped the 100 backstroke tonight. Isabelle Stadden saw a huge drop as the AquaJets swimmer touched in 51.33. That swim was just .03 shy of Regan Smith‘s National Age Group record (51.30). Nation’s Capital’s Phoebe Bacon was runner up in 51.60.

Caitlin Brooks, a 17 year old from Gator Swim Club, picked up Bronze in 52.48.

Grace Countie of the Marlins of Raleigh finished fourth (52.94). She was followed in the A final by Ellie Waldrep (53.51), Kaylyn Schoof (53.64), Brooks’ teammate Talia Bates (53.97), and Kobie Melton (54.42).

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Jack Dolan, a 17 year old from Rockwood Swim Club, led a trio of 47 second swims into the wall. Dolan touched in 47.28, followed by Academy Bullets’ Spencer Walker in 47.67 and Mitchell Whyte in 47.76.

Peter Simmons was fourth with a 48.21. The AquaJets had a finalist on the men’s side as well, as Jack Dahlgren, a Missouri commit, touched fifth in 48.54.

Aidan Stoffle (48.66), Peter Larson (48.87), and Roberty Kondalski (48.96) rounded out the top heat.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Thirteen year old sensation Claire Tuggle dropped an impressive five seconds from her lifetime best to outlast 15 year old Ashley Strouse and University of Georgia commit, and Marlins of Raleigh’s Madison Homovich and win the 500 freestyle. Tuggle touched in 4:41.36. At only 13, she is now only six seconds slower than Katie Ledecky‘s 13-14 National Age Group record.

Strouse finished in 4:41.78 while Homovich stopped the clock in 4:41.95. The race was tight the whole way. At the 200 mark they flipped in 1:52.38, 1:52.29, and 1:52.38 respectively).

Lola Mull was fourth in 4:46.56, just faster than Grace Sheble with a 4:47.85. Sophie Skinner (4:49.30), Rachel Klinker (4:50.00), and Addison Smith (4:53.93) finished sixth through eighth.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Metro Atlanta Aquatic Club’s Willie Davis raced to a 43.98 100 freestyle, just clearing the 44 second mark, and picking up gold. In his second swim of the night, Dolan knocked a full second from his prelims time, to touch in 44.06, good for second, and a lifetime best by .01. On his heels was David Madej in 44.08.

William Davis turned in a 44.58, good for fourth, ahead of Brandon Hamblin in 44.75. Also on his second race of the night, Larson was sixth with a 44.83. Julian Hill (44.87) and Charles Scheinfeld (45.99) finished seventh and eighth.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Anna Keating took top honors in the 200 breaststroke, and continued a strong finals showing from the youngsters. The 15 year old touched in 2:09.63. Continuing their strong week, the Marlins of Raleigh took silver and bronze with Abigail Arens (2:10.04) and Ashley McCauley (2:10.20). Just behind that duo was Gillian Davey in 2:10.62.

Fifth place went to Heather Maccausland in 2:11.66. She was followed by Kylie Powers (2:12.44), Annika Wagner (2:13.03), and Valerie Tarazi (2:13.64).

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Seven swimmers were under two minutes in tonight’s 200 breaststroke final. Charles Scheinfeld earned the victory, touching in 1:55.94. Casey Storch finished second in 1:56.67. Finishing third was Izaak Bastian in 1:57.90.

Kyle Barker edged Bernhard Christianson 1:58.40 to 1:58.60 for fourth place. Michael Chang (1:59.21) and Jason Louser (1:59.32) were also under two minutes. Andrew Grespin (2:01.89) finished eighth.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Swimming for the second time tonight, Bates won the 100 butterfly. The Gator Swim Club 17 year old touched in 52.87. Fifteen year old Victoria Huske earned runner up honors in 53.15.

A Nation’s Capital trio followed. Abigail Harter (53.51), Sydney Harrington (53.58), and Isabella Gati (53.63) were third through fifth.

Completing the Championship final were Schoof (53.75), Abigail Gibbons (53.92), and Mallory Beil (54.33).

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Willie Davis pulled off an impressive double, adding a 100 butterfly gold to his 100 freestyle title. Davis touched in 47.65, out touching Marlins of Raleigh’s NC State commit Zach Brown in 47.66. Also in his second Championship final of the night, Davis’ twin brother William came up just short of the brother one-two, finishing third in 48.01. He edged Charles Korndorffer, who wound up fourth in 48.09.

Philip Manoff, who will head to Virginia Tech in the fall, finished fifth (48.17) and David Madej (48.26) was sixth. In seventh was Henry Claesson, another future Hokie (48.68) while Konnar Klinksiek (48.78) snagged eighth.

Women’s 4×50 Freestyle Relay

AquaJets’ Jordan McGintyPeyton D’EmanueleAbigail Kapeller, and Isabelle Stadden took home gold in 1:31.75. Finishing second was the team of Mariana KrausJessica DavisGeorgia White, and Grace Cooper from Delta Aquatics in a 1:32.21. Third went to Huntsville’s Alison HuRebekah HamiltonRegan Weakley, and Kobie Melton who combined for a 1:32.34.

Nation’s Capital (1:32.45), Academy Bullets (1:32.61), Marlins of Raleigh (1:32.81), Gator Swim Club (1:33.27), and Scottsdale Aquatic Club (1:33.32) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 4×50 Freestyle Relay

In the final event of the night, Caleb Carlson teamed up with Spencer WalkerWilliam Kamps, and Horace Qiao to win the 200 freestyle relay for Academy Bullets in a 1:21.66. New Trier took second in 1:21.90 with the team of Charles ScheinfeldRyan GridleyThomas Barr, and Pearce Bailey. Nation’s Capital took home bronze behind a 1:22.24 effort from Brandon Hamblin, Jonathan Pollock, Steven Thalblum, and Peter Makin.

Gator Swim Club (1:23.61) and Waukesha Express (1:23.67) were fourth and fifth. Long Island Aquatic Club and St. Charles Swim Team tied for sixth in 1:23.71. Fox Valley was eighth with a 1:23.79.
