The meet was highlighted by not one, but two national high school records: Aaron Shackell in the 200 free and Will Modglin in the 100 back.
A Carmel senior,Shackell swam a lifetime best by two seconds in the 200 free during prelims Friday night to knock off the national high school record in the event. He swam a time of 1:32.85, crushing his previous best time of 1:34.88 set last month while taking the top seed in the event by five seconds.
Shackell knocked off the National High School record of 1:32.99 (public school and overall) set by Carson Foster in 2019, and he also broke the state record of 1:33.30 by Drew Kibler. Shackell, who is headed off to Cal this fall, won in 1:33.68.
Modglin clocked a 45.08 during the prelims of the 100 back, going out in 21.68 and coming home in 23.40. The Zionsville senior later won during finals in 45.69. For more than a decade, Ryan Murphy owned the national high school record before it was broken by Modglin, thanks to a performance of 45.34 in 2012.
Modglin, a future Texas Longhorn, also set a new state record in the 200 IM. His time of 1:43.74 won by nearly two seconds, lowering his own mark of 1:44.10 set last year. He is the reigning Swimming World Male High School Swimmer of the Year.
Led by Modglin’s 19.64 leadoff slip, Zionsville cruised to first in the 200 free relay while breaking the state record of 1:21.21 held by Carmel since 2017. Modglin was joined by teammates Walker Mattice (20.63), Gabe Berry (19.93) and Will Raches (19.93) for a final time of 1:20.53.
