Where Summer McIntosh Ranks All-Time in Her Primary Events
After opening the Canadian Trials for the World Championships with a world-record performance in the 400-meter freestyle, Summer McIntosh has followed with three more dazzling performances. In the 800 freestyle on Sunday night, the 18-year-old star clocked 8:05.07 to move to the No. 2 performer of all-time, and to register the third-fastest performance in history. Only American Katie Ledecky has been faster in the 800 freestyle, led by her world record of 8:04.12 from earlier this year in Fort Lauderdale.
On Monday night, McIntosh took down the world record in the 200 individual medley, going 2:05.70. That effort was well under the previous global standard of 2:06.12, set in 2015 by Hungarian Katinka Hosszu. For good measure, her 2:02.26 in the 200 butterfly on Tuesday scared the world record of 2:01.81, set in 2009 by China’s Liu Zige.
A four-time individual medalist at last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, McIntosh is still scheduled to contest the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 400 IM before the Canadian Trials come to a close in British Columbia.
