USA Swimming Nationals: Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff Win Highpoint Awards; Club Wolverine, Tucson Ford Win Team Titles
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 4. ALTHOUGH it should not come as a surprise, Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff walked away with the individual highpoint awards at the USA Swimming National Championships held at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI.
Michael Phelps, representing Club Wolverine, amassed 102 points to lead a trio of teammates in the top three. Erik Vendt placed second with 71 points, while Peter Vanderkaay tied for third with Longhorn's Eric Shanteau with 66 points.
North Baltimore's Hoff put together 94 points to win the women's title, while California's Dana Vollmer took second with 77 points in a tight race over Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza's third-place tally of 76 points.
With the top three individual scorers coming from Club Wolverine on the men's side, it is not shocking that the team ran away with the team crown with 510 points. Longhorn Aquatics took second with 356 points, while Trojan Swim Club finished third with 147 points.
Tucson Ford captured the women's team title with a tally of 242 points, while Club Wolverine finished second with 184 points. Trojan Swim Club placed third in the women's race as well with 169 points.
Club Wolverine also claimed the combined title with 694 points, while Longhorn Aquatics (516) and Trojan Swim Club (316) comprised the rest of the top three in the combined team title race.
