UMS Wright Prep Girls Three-Peat, Boaz and TR Miller Boys Tie at Alabama 1A-5A State Championships

The Alabama 1A-5A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Dec. 1 at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center at Auburn University.
The UMS Wright Prep won the team title on the girls’ side for the third-straight year, finishing with 285 points ahead of Whitesburg Christian (209) and Scottsboro (149). Boaz and TR Miller each earned 161 points to share the championship crown for the boys’ meet.

Girls Meet

The meet began as the Madison Academy 4×50 medley relay team of Rachel Culbreath, Katie Pollard, Hallie Mitchell and Haley Culbreath combined to win in 1:58.55.
Not too long after helping her team to a relay win, Pollard was back in the water to claim an individual title in the 200 IM with a winning time of 2:09.83. She then went on to post a three-second victory in the 100 breast in 1:04.46.
St. Michael Catholic’s Lucy O’Neill cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:50.75. She later won the 500 free in dominating fashion, taking the title in 5:01.83 to finish 15 seconds ahead of the field.
Opp’s Emma Younce sprinted her way to a win in the 50 free, getting to the wall in 24.52 to hold off runner-up Isabelle Melanson (24.88) of Houston Academy. The 100 back title went to Cedar Bluff’s Leighton Rainer in 1:01.47, not too far ahead of runner-up Sam Davis (1:01.75) of Appalachian.
Loveless Academic Magnet’s Katherine Hammond flew to first in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall first in 57.74. She held off a charging Prather Hargrove of Trinity Presbyterian who also got under the minute mark in 57.99.
Whitesburg Christian’s Maddie Bibb earned the state title in the 100 free with a time of 54.26. She then joined teammates Gabriela Comulada, Mary Hinely and Haynes Amos to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:46.88.
UMS Wright Prep’s Blakeslee Elliot dove to the top spot on the 1-meter board after posting a final score of 335.40. Her teammate Tori Waters took second in 3:05.15. UMS Wright Prep’s Harper McLean, Mallory Duncan, Molly McNair and Clarke Doyle concluded the girls’ meet by winning the 4×100 free relay by five seconds in 3:51.65.

St. Michael Catholic’s Andrew Fouty, Joe Druhan, Ben Adamski and Jordan Marlowe started the boys’ meet off with a 4×50 medley win, combing to post a time of 1:50.44.
Shortly after, Fouty dove back in the water to claim the 200 IM, shaving almost nine seconds from his morning swim to win in 2:01.56. He later led the charge in the 100 back, winning by nearly three seconds in 56.58.
Briarwood Christian’s Mason Mathias dropped nearly three seconds from his prelims time to post a two-second victory in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:42.07. He then added a gold in the 500 free, winning by eight seconds in 4:36.23.
JACK Dexter Browning splashed and dashed his way to a win in the 50 free in a final time of 21.36. ONEON Ethan Adams also snuck under 22 seconds in 21.98 for second place. Browning then won the 100 free in 46.78, again ahead of Adams (48.69).
Scottsboro’s Tony Pereira earned the 100 fly gold with a time of 55.20 and FAITH’s Aden Kraft was victorious in the 100 breast in a speedy 1:00.99. MA’s Taylor Young took the top spot on the 1-meter board, diving to first with a score of 341.15.
TR Miller’s Nolan Atkinson, Micah Flores, Mac Baxter and Cole Jernigan won a close 4×50 free relay in 1:36.25, just ahead of runner-ups Jasper (1:36.44). The same quartet concluded the meet as champions in the 4×100 free relay in 3:35.99.
