UCLA Women Win Nine Out of 10 Swimming Events in Win Over Nevada
Following a loss to crosstown rival USC Friday, the UCLA Bruins bounced back with a dual meet win over Nevada Saturday by a final score of 163-80.
The Bruins’ Claudia Yovanovich, Sarah Bennetts, Fay Lustria and Jada Duncan topped the 200 medley relay by more than three seconds with a time of 1:36.47. Yovanovich returned to place first in the 50 freestyle in 22.35 while Lustria topped the 100 butterfly (53.65) and Duncan was the winner of the 100 free (48.56). Bennetts was the top finisher in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.47).
Applejean Gwinn came out on top in the 1650 free (16:53.67), and she later earned first in the 500 free in 4:49.31, beating Nevada’s Huska Batbayar by 0.13 at the finish. Gizem Guvenc rode a strong finish to take first in the 200 free (1:46.33). The team of Alexis Schaffer, Duncan, Anna Wetteland and Guvenc secured the win in the 200 free relay, finishing in 1:29.86.
Nevada’s Scarlett Ferris got the better of the field in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.78. Nevada also had wins in diving as Bailey Heydra was first on 1-meter (300.85) and 3-meter (307.10).
