TYR Pro Series Knoxville – Day Four Men’s Prelims: Ryan Murphy Pops Solid Time in 200 Backstroke
The first stop of the 2023 TYR Pro Series wrapped up prelims competition on Saturday morning at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville. Competition was held at the University of Tennessee in the 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. During the night session, the final of the 1500 freestyle will be held, with reigning Olympic champion Bobby Finke scheduled to race.
Here is a look at what went down during Saturday’s prelims.
200 Individual Medley
Morning action in the 200 medley was relatively subdued, with Daniel Sos of Cardinal Aquatics grabbing the No. 1 seed for the final in 2:02.76. Canadian Finlay Knox, who enjoyed a strong showing at last month’s World Short Course Championships, taking the second seed in 2:03.34, with Kieran Smith checking in at 2:03.55 for the third seed.

200 Backstroke
The 2016 Olympic champion and reigning world titlist in the event, Cal’s Ryan Murphy easily posted the fastest time of the morning in the 200 backstroke, going 1:57.62. Murphy is expected to depart the meet before finals, so his morning included the intent to deliver a strong performance. The second-fastest time of prelims was logged by Destin Lasco, as his outing of 2:00.37 was a tenth quicker than the 2:00.47 of Hunter Tapp. Kieran Smith qualified for his second final of the session with a mark of 2:00.57, and was followed by Chase Kalisz in 2:01.51.

50 Breaststroke
One event after Tennessee’s Mona McSharry snared the top seed in the women’s 50 breaststroke, Michael Houlie kept the Volunteers rolling in the men’s edition of the event. Houlie surged to a time of 27.76, the only sub-28 effort in the field on the way to the No. 1 position for the final. Thomas Cope earned the second seed on the strength of a 28.01 swim.

Three athletes managed 49-low performances in the 100 freestyle, led by Andrej Barna and his 49.03 clocking. Barna was followed by a pair of Cal standouts, as Jack Alexy (the winner of the 50 freestyle earlier in the meet) touched in 49.14 and Bjorn Seeliger went 49.18.
