Cheyenne Mountain showed impressive depth throughout the meet to capture the state title, despite not securing any gold medals. Head coach Kate Doane was tabbed Colorado 4A Coach of the Year.
Top performers helping Cheyenne Mountain hoist the trophy included Max Roslin (2nd, 200 IM, 1:55.03), Raglan Ward (2nd, 100 free, 46.26), Xander Taylor (3rd, 200 free, 1:44.19; 4th, 100 back, 51.99) and Ethan Carr (4th, 100 fly, 51.41). Their 4×50 medley and 4×50 free relays both posted runner-up finishes as well.
McCarty, a senior at Discovery Canyon, stole the show at the meet with a pair of Colorado state records. He swept both the 50 free (19.47) and 100 free (42.73) in prelims. He also was an important part of his team’s winning 4×50 medley and 4×100 free relays.
The NC State commit earned Colorado 4A Swimmer of the Year honors for his impressive performances.
Joining McCarty with individual victories for Discovery Canyon were Adam Pannell in the 200 free (1:40.80) and Taylor Wagner in the 500 free (4:35.03).
Like McCarty, Jake Eccleston of Windsor was also a double-event victory. The sophomore made waves by first winning the 200 IM (1:49.46) by nearly six seconds. He then broke the 4A state record in the 100 breast with a time of 55.04.
Both of Eccleston’s wins marked the first state titles in Windsor school history.
Last year’s state champ in the 50 free, Xavier Hill of George Washington, placed second this season behind McCarty in 20.50. Hill, a senior, then went on to win the 100 fly in 49.09. Pannell placed second after Hill in the 100 fly with a time of 50.79.
