To Beijing and Back, Episode 8: Visiting a Chinese Pearl Factory
Left Sidebar
BEIJING, China, August 14. THE eighth episode of To Beijing and Back visits a store in Beijing to learn more about freshwater pearls.
Host Brent Rutemiller and a Chinese guide start by showing how pearls are cultivated from oysters that are four or five years old. Looking at the shape and age of the oyster can determine the quality of the pearl inside. A younger oyster would produce a better pearl. Many oysters can produce more than 20 pearls.
The guide shows the way to determine if pearls are real or plastic. Plastic pearls have fewer imperfections than real pearls.
