The Fran Crippen SafeSwim Festival to Take Place This Weekend in Florida

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, May 4. THE International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), City of Ft. Lauderdale, and The Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation (FCEF) are teaming up to honor Fran Crippen, a U.S. National Swimming Champion, who died tragically while competing in a race in October of 2010. The Fran Crippen SafeSwim Festival will take place Saturday, May 7 at Ft. Lauderdale Beach in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Crippen was a loyal ambassador of sport, fair play, and humanitarian goodwill. He positively impacted this world by embodying what is best in international athletic competition. The day will commemorate Fran Crippen's sprit with three events: 1 Mile Dash for Cash (Open to registered USA Swimming and USA Master Swimmers), 10K Marathon Swim (Invitation Only), and a two-hour Open Water Safety Clinic with the Ft. Lauderdale Beach Patrol and World/National Champion Open Water Swimmers (Open to all).

The 1 Mile Dash for Cash will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 10K will take place at 11 a.m. The Open Water Clinic will begin at 2 p.m. The clinic will be led by United States Olympians and International Swimming Stars, including three-time Olympian and seven-time Olympic medalist Aaron Peirsol and two-time Olympian and three-time Olympic medalist Peter Vanderkaay,

Registration for the 1 Mile Dash for Cash and the Open Water Swim Clinic can be found online. Both events are $30 and registration is open until 12 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011. There will be in-person registration available for the 1 Mile Dash for Cash and Open Water Swim Clinic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6. Day-of registration is ONLY available for the Open Water Swim Clinic starting at 9 a.m.

The event will support the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the FCEF. The mission of the ISHOF is to promote the benefits and importance of swimming as a key to fitness, good health, quality of life, and the water safety of children. The FCEF is working to empower athletes who exemplify the principles Fran embodied as they journey to elevate themselves, by providing aid for athletes as well as advocating for safe competitive environments.
