Texas’ Madisyn Cox Wins Three at Tri-Meet with Florida and Indiana

After a focus on long course racing, day two of the tri-meet between Texas, Indiana, and Florida featured the usual dual meet races in short course yards.

Texas’ Clark Smith, the reigning NCAA champion in the 500 free, won his signature event with a time of 4:21.95. Jackson Miller of Indiana grabbed second in the event with a 4:26.37, while Florida’s Arthur Frayler was third with a 4:29.16.

Indiana’s Blake Pieroni turned in a pair of wins in the short course format. Pieroni delivered his first win in the 200 free with a finishing time of 1:36.06, before besting star Florida sprinter Caeleb Dressel in the 100 free. Pieroni out-touched Dressel by a slim .01 to stop the clock at 43.69 over Dressel’s 43.70.

Dressel, the reigning NCAA Champion in the 50 free, claimed the win in his signature event with a 19.36, making him the only athlete under the 20 second mark.

Texas swept the men’s 200 fly with Joseph Schooling finishing first with a time of 1:45.78. Teammates Will Glass (1:48.03) and John Martens (1:48.50) joined him to round out the top three.

Schooling continued his success in the butterfly with a 46.97 win in the 100 fly. Teammate Jack Conger and Dressel battled it out for the second place finish, but it was Conger who got his hand to the wall first. Conger finished with a 47.55 over Dressel’s 47.57.

Will Licon, the NCAA Champion in the 200 breaststroke, gave Texas a win in that event with a time of 1:58.84, making him the only athlete in that event to swim under the 2-minute mark.

On the women’s side, Madisyn Cox (1:47.93) and Brooke Hansen (1:49.41) of Texas finished first and third, respectively, in the women’s 200 free. Florida’s Ashlee Linn was second with a time of 1:48.49.

Cox grabbed her second win of the day in the 200 breaststroke finishing with a 2:12.83. The Indiana duo of Miranda Tucker (2:12.90) and Lilly King (2:13.62) rounded out the top three.

Cox grabbed her third win of the meet in the 400 IM with a time of 4:15.00.

The women’s 100 back proved to be a quick race with all three of the top finishers touching within .34 seconds of each other. Marie Chamberlain of Indiana stopped the clock first with a time of 55.01, while Florida teammates Ashlee Linn and Georgia-Mae Hohmann battled for second. Linn got her hand on the wall a slim .04 ahead of Hohmann to finish second with a 55.31 over Hohmann’s 55.35.

Florida’s Natalie Hinds collected wins in both the 50 and the 100 free. Hinds bested the competition with a 22.90 in the 50 before turning in a time of 49.32 in the 100.

Strong races continued into the final events with the top three finishers in the 100 fly touching within .17 seconds of each other. Indiana’s Gia Dalesandro claimed first with a time of 54.43. Remedy Rule of Texas grabbed second overall with a time of 54.54, while Hinds took third with a 54.60.
