The Barrington High School Girls emerged victorious at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Championships held on Monday, at Brown University in Providence. The girls were led by Sydni Diehl who claimed individual titles in the sprint freestyles, and contributed the fly leg and the anchor to Barrington’s victorious 200 medley and 200 freestyle Relays.

La Salle Academy finished in second place (284 points), followed by North Kingston High School in third (238 points), the Prout School in fourth (159 points) and East Greenwich in fifth (155 points).

Barrington got off to a fast start, earning the top spot on the podium in the 200 medley relay with Cali Diehl, Melanie Baker, Diehl, and Rachel Baker combining for a 1:49.96. They were joined on the podium by the silver medalists of the Prout School–Brenna Furlong, Laura Borges, Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj, and Emma McCall (1:50.60) and the bronze medalists of LaSalle Academy–Jordyn Raftery, Maddie Tetreault, Ava Andrews, Maddy Redding (1:51.32).

Redding claimed individual gold in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.01, finishing just ahead of East Greenwich’s Audrey Brecher (1:53.95), with Abby Duffy of North Kingston (2:00.20) almost breaking the two minute barrier.

Bay View Academy’s Gianna Spremullo earned the first of her two individual victories, posting a winning time of 2:04.78 in the 200 IM to outpace the field, with North Smithfield’s Sara Gendron finishing second in 2:09.65 and Tetreault in third (2:10.80).

Diehl took the first of the sprint doubles, stopping the clock in the 50 free at 23.47, with North Kingston’s Hannah Petrone claiming the silver (24.43), and Cumberland High School’s Caroline Shen the silver (24.91). The 100 free saw another strong first place finish by Diehl in 51.02, this time followed by Redding (52.84), with Shen again in third (54.56).

The 100 fly saw two swimmers breaking 1:00. Gendron took first in 56.94, followed by Miko-Rydzaj in 57.72 and Narragansett’s Christina McPhillips in 1:00.02.

The 500 free was a battle among three swimmers, with multiple lead changes. Tetreault outsplit the field on the final 100, pulling ahead to record the win in 5:05.68. Abigail Maguire of North Kingston claimed second in 5:07.32, with Brecher finishing third in 5:08.31.

Barrington prevailed once again in the 200 free relay with Emma DiGiacomo, Julia Zulker, Melanie Baker, and Sydni Diehl hitting the wall in 1:40.18. Right behind them were LaSalle (Marina Rouse, Samantha Karlson, Ava Andrews, Maddy Redding–1:41.06) and North Kingston (Lexi Duffy, Abigail Ladstatter, Abby Duffy, Abigail Maguire–1:41.76).

Spremullo claimed her second individual title in the 100 backstroke, posting a winning time of 56.94. Roger’s Anna Bodycoat (59.28) joined her under the minute barrier, with Cali Diehl finishing third in 1:00.06.

The 100 breaststroke was perhaps the most closely contested events of the day. Only two tenths of a second separated the podium finishers. Miko-Rydzaj grabbed a slight lead on the first 50 and held on for the win in 1:06.47, just ahead of Chariho Regional High School’s Hannah Benavides in 1:06.63 and Bay View Academy’s Juliana Goncalves in 1:06.65.

The North Kingston team claimed gold in the final event of the day when the 400 Free relay of Duffy, Aubrey Forman, Duffy, and Maguire hit the pad in 3:41.42. They were followed by La Salle (Annabelle Redding, Rouse, Karlson, Tetreault—3:43.02) and East Greenwich (Lauren Salvadore, Emma Macdonald, Grace Sheridan, Brecher–3:43.80).
