SAN DIEGO, California, September 8. THE doors swung open and 500 of the world’s finest swim coaches sat down to a night of celebration.
Several coaches were inducted into the American Swim Coaches Association’s (ASCA) Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees included Bud McAllister. McAllister coached the legendary distance swimmer Janet Evans who was on hand to introduce Coach McAllister. Bud was inducted along with fellow coaches Jack Simon and Bill Peak who passed away in 1996.
Members of Jack Simon’s family were seated to watch the inductions along with Bill Peak’s children. Mary T. Meagher Plant did the honor of presenting the award to Bill Peak’s children.
Other honors of the night included the Peter Daland Award, which was a first time award presented to Don Gambril. Numerous Age Group Coaches of the Year awards were also presented to recognize their work in producing young athletes.
The night concluded with Bob Bowman, coach of Michael Phelps from Club Wolverine at the University of Michigan, being honored as ASCA’s Coach of the Year.
