Swimming World College Conference Carnival: Minnesota Takes Day One Lead

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, January 22. THE second annual Swimming World College Conference Carnival opened up with some exciting swims on the first day of short course yard competition. The meet is the second year of a reintroduction of the Yale Carnival from the 1950s, with the modern twist of being an all-female competition.
Minnesota took a first-day lead for the title with 160 points, while hosting Rutgers stood second with 104 points. UMBC (78) and Richmond (58) rounded out the top four. Rider and Central Connecticut State are competing in a head-to-head dual as part of the festivities. Rider finished the night with a 61-16 lead over Central Connecticut.
Minnesota began the evening with a strong 1-2 finish in the women's 400 medley relay. The team of Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Alison Eggers won in 3:44.86, while teammates Castina Wabeke, Haley Spencer, Molly Belk and Marissa Davies touched second in 3:50.83.
Rider's foursome of Kellyanne Tomasula, Jenni Sullivan, Kelly O'Connor and Brianna Burns beat Central's Hannah Packer, Kristen Malski, Katie Lang and Alex Czaplicki, 3:56.98 to 4:00.63, to take the lead in the dual meet.
Minnesota enjoyed another 1-2 finish in the women's 500 free from sisters Ashley and Kristen Steenvoorden. Ashley won in an NCAA B cut time of 4:49.41, while Kristen placed second in 4:52.52 – just missing the B cut. UMBC's Sam Maccherola finished third in 5:02.06. Central's Taylor Friedmann topped Rider's Addisson Oswald, 5:00.38 to 5:05.40, in the dual portion of the meet.
Minnesota won another title as Tyler scorched the competition in the women's 200 breast with a B-cut time of 2:14.99. Spencer gave Minnesota another 1-2 with a 2:17.02, while Rutgers' Taylor Zafir wound up third in 2:20.20. Rider's Alicia Fimple beat Central's Kristen Malski, 2:27.45 to 2:27.69, in the dual.
In a close finish, Rutgers' Cat Whetstone held off a hard-charging Whitehead from Minnesota in the women's 200 back, 2:01.85 to 2:01.95. Rutgers' Brianne Lindblad claimed third overall in 2:04.96. Rider went 1-2 in the dual with Tomasula (2:03.45) and O'Connor (2:04.89) topping the B final.
Minnesota returned to its 1-2 ways in the women's 100 free. Eggers stopped the clock in 52.22 for the win, while Davis placed second in 52.36. Rutgers' Shayna Longacre picked up third in 52.53. Rider went 1-2 again in the dual portion with Burns (52.27) and Fimple (53.70) leading the way.
Another Minnesota 1-2 went up on the board in the women's 200 fly. Jamison led the way with a B-cut time of 2:00.26. Belk placed just behind with a second-place 2:00.94. UMBC's Jennifer Esposito grabbed third with a time of 2:01.93. Rider also went 1-2 in the dual meet with Melissa Bates (2:05.10) and O'Connor (2:05.59) topping the B final.
Brittney Kuras stopped the bleeding for Rutgers with a winning time of 2:03.57 in the women's 200 IM. Minnesota's Kristen Steenvoorden earned another second-place finish with a 2:05.67, while teammate Tyler finished third in 2:06.59. Rider's Tomasula beat Central's Czaplicki, 2:09.69 to 2:10.27, in the dual meet.
Minnesota completed a strong first day of competition with a win in the women's 200 free relay. Jamison, Eggers, Radecke and Davis won the race in 1:35.62, while Rutgers' Kuras, Whetstone, Longacre and Lindblad took second in 1:36.91. Rider's Burns, Stephanie Anderer, Oswald and Fimple won the dual portion of the race with a 1:38.61. Central's Lang, Friedmann, Alyssa Carlucci and Malski placed second in 1:45.56.
In diving action on the one-meter, Minnesota's Kelci Bryant put up a 344.50 to win the individual title. Rider's Amanda Burke finished second with 336.75 points, while Rutgers' Erin Saunders took third overall with 283.30 points.
Meanwhile, New Jersey age group relay swims also took place in the 200-yard medley relays. Lakeland Hills' Bryana Cielo, Ingrid Shu, Katelyn Mann and Erin Kiely won the girls 11-12 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.98. Lakeland Hills also picked up the boys 11-12 200 medley relay title with a 2:01.83 clocked by Alexander Zhang, Garrett Lynch, Nicholas Schrope and Shane Vyskocil.
