FINA has released the psych sheet for the pool swimming competition at the world championships, which begins Sunday in Kazan, Russia. Naturally, scratches and last-minute replacements are always bound to happen, so the list is not an official start list for each event.
As usual, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu stands out with seven individual events on her racing schedule. In addition to defending her 200 IM and 400 IM world titles, Hosszu will be looking to upgrade her 2013 bronze medal in the 200 fly. She’ll also race the 100 and 200 backstrokes, where she’s seeded second in the 200 back and sixth in the 100. Hosszu is also entered in the 100 and 200 freestyles, with the 100 free being a new addition to her program.
The psych sheet also confirms that China’s Sun Yang is entered in the 200 freestyle as he looks to make history and win four freestyle gold medals in one world championship. Sun will be defending his world titles in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles as well.
Laszlo Cseh is set for his seventh world championships appearance, and is putting a strong focus on butterfly, racing in all three distances. The 29-year-old will also be a medal contender in the 200 IM, an event in which he has won four worlds medals, none of which are gold. He’s skipping the 400 IM, an event he won in 2005.
South Africa’s Cameron Van Der Burgh has hinted for many years that he wants to add the 200 breaststroke to his program. The former world record holder in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes – and the reigning 50 breast world champion – is signed up for the 200 breast in Russia, his first time swimming it at the world championships.
The United States is one of the few countries to have two entries in almost every event in both genders. The men’s 50 butterfly (Tim Phillips) and the women’s 50 backstroke (Rachel Bootsma) are the only events in which Team USA entered one athlete.
