Shareef Elaydi Just Misses Michael Andrew NAG in 100-Yard Breaststroke
While racing at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championships in Fresno, Archbishop Mitty junior Shareef Elaydi just missed the National Age Group (NAG) record in the 100-yard breaststroke for the 15-16 classification. Elaydi secured a dominant victory, clocking 51.85 for his four laps. His time was just a tenth of a second off the NAG standard of Michael Andrew, who went 51.75 in 2015.
Elaydi, who will turn 17 next month, was out in 24.48 and came home with a split of 27.37. His performance was good for a commanding win, as second place went to Isaac Carsel in 53.20. Earlier in the session, Elaydi was the runnerup in the 200 individual medley, behind a swim of 1:45.22. Cal recruit Tim Wu was the gold medalist in the 200 IM, turning in a time of 1:44.83.
Elaydi is not a stranger to NAG standards, as he is the record-holder in the 13-14 classification for the long-course version of the 200 IM.
Elaydi also saw relay duty for Archbishop Mitty on Saturday. While Valley Christian set a state-meet record in the 200 medley relay, going 1:28.80, Elaydi split 23.89 for the breaststroke leg of Mitty’s runnerup squad, which touched the wall in 1:30.83.
