(Race Video) Sarah Sjostrom Blasts Top-Ranked 52.78 in 100 Free
Sarah Sjostrom blitzed the women’s 100-meter free at the 2016 Swedish Open in Stockholm with the top time in the world this year.
Sjostrom raced her way to a 52.78, going out in 25.50, to clear the previous top time in the world of 52.85 set by Cate Campbell at the NSW Championships.
Sjostrom’s time was nearly a lifetime best, just missing her all-time fifth-ranked 52.67 from the 2014 European Championships.
Aliaksandra Herasimenia cranked out a second-place time of 53.81 tonight to move to eighth in the world rankings. Ida Marko-Varga took third overall in 55.14.
Cameron van der Burgh blasted the men’s 50-meter breast finale with a 27.08 to take the top spot in the world this year. Panagiotis Samilidis and Glenn Snyders shared that spot with a pair of 27.34s.
Giedrius Titenis took second in 27.77, while Edgar Crespo earned third in 27.83.
Henrik Christiansen moved up to second in the world in the men’s 800-meter free with a 7:48.26. Gregorio Paltrinieri is the only swimmer faster so far this year with a 7:47.32. Filip Zaborowski took second in 8:02.75 with Victor Johansson earning third with a Swedish junior national record of 8:05.29.
Ruta Meilutyte cruised into win the women’s 100-meter breast in 1:06.57. That’s off her second-ranked season best of 1:05.82 from the Edinburgh International meet. Viktoria Zeynep Gunes took second tonight in 1:07.73 with Sophie Hansson taking third in 1:07.85.
Simon Sjodin captured the men’s 200-meter IM title in 1:59.53. That swim put him 10th in the world rankings. Erik Persson took second in 2:00.96 with Raphael Stacchiotti taking third in 2:02.65.
Ari-Pekka Liukkonen tied Evgeny Sedov for the men’s 50-meter free title with 22.37s. Andrey Grechin picked up third in 22.38.
Chiara Masini Luccetti topped the women’s 800-meter free in 8:46.33. Margherita Panziera touched just behind in 8:46.93. Milena Karpisz placed third in 8:48.35.
Svetlana Chimrova claimed the women’s 200-meter fly in a time of 2:10.79. Ida Marko-Varga took second in 2:12.66 with Susanna Negri snaring third in 2:13.50.
