Riley Pestorius Opens YMCA Nationals With a Close Victory in Men’s 1500
The 2017 YMCA Long Course Nationals kicked off tonight at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Action on the first day only included prelims of the 200 freestyle relays and a timed finals of the 1500 freestyle.
Red Bank’s Marie Schobel, Caroline McGann, Ginger Hansen, and Shannon Judge edged Cheshire’s Alexandra Tyler, Elizabeth Boyer, Mia Leko, Tara Tiernan by .01 for the top seed in the women’s 200 freestyle relay. Red Bank touched in 1:47.01 ahead of Cheshire’s 1:47.02. Another mere .06 back was Fanwood Scotch Plain’s Marlise Moesch, Darlene Fung, Rachel Maizes, and Monika Burzynski with a 1:47.08. Finals will take place tomorrow night.
In the men’s 200 freestyle relay Somerset Hills picked up the top seed. The team of Jack Alexy, Sean Foster, Roo Fenton, and Ryan Carkhuff stopped the clock in 1:36.24. Just over a tenth behind was the team of Matt Wilson, KJ Losee, Ben Puglessi, and Henry Schutte from Rapid Area. Powel Crosley’s Carson Burt, Garrison Herfel, Will McCullough, and Charles Leibson secured third with a 1:36.47.
York’s Leah Braswell was first to the wall in the women’s 1500 freestyle. The University of Florida commit hit the wall in 16:46.88. Catherine Buroker of Wilton was only five seconds behind with her 16:51.85. Braswell led the whole way, creating more distance between the two as she went. She was up by a second at the 500 and two at the 1,000. Nicole Welch from North Shore completed the top three with a 17:18.40.
In the men’s 1500 freestyle, Somerset Valley’s Riley Pestorius touched first in 16:07.56. At the 500 Patrick Butkovich of ME Lyons led by a second, over the next 500 meters Pestorius fought back to lead by six seconds at the 1000 meter mark. Burkovich rallied at the end to touch in 16:09.99, just two and a half seconds back from the winner. Racing from lane one, Greensboro’s 16 year old Ethan Knorr dropped thirty seconds to place third in 16:12.72.
