Reilly Lanigan Posts Two Top Seeds on Day 1 of Illinois Girls High School State Championship

The Girls Illinois High School State Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off today with some very strong swims. Reilly Lanigan of Lake Forest started her senior meet off with a bang, posting top seeds in both of her individual events. Lanigan posted a time of 1:48.49. She was followed by Kristen Jacobsen of Barrington who just out touched Ella Tierney posting a time of 1:49.37 to Tierney’s 1:49.40.

Lanigan followed up her strong swim in the 200-yard free posting a top seed in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:48.88. She was followed by Jacobsen who touched in 4:50.32, while Tierney was just a hundredth behind in 4:50.33. The three women mimicked their placing exactly from the 200-yard free.

The morning featured the Girls 1 meter diving prelims, where Senior Sydney Dusel of Naperville Central posted the top seed with a point total of 357.45. She was followed by Freshman Lucy Hogan of Evanston who posted 345.65. Fellow freshman Jessie Creed of New Trier was third with a point total of 336.90.

In the swimming events, Rosary High School’s team of Athena Ye (25.54), Sydney VanOvermeier (29.69), Camryn Streid (24.82) and Emily Ryan (23.03) with a time of 1:43.08. In second, Loyola Academy’s team of Shannon Kearney (25.97), Claire Voss (28.22), Maria Kyle (25.71) and Cassidy Coughlin (23.62) for a time of 1:43.52. In a close third Oak Park River Forest’s team of Hanna Blankemeier (25.76), Jilly Cronin (28.97), Genevieve Curry (25.99) and Alexandra Gill (22.92) with a time of 1:43.64.

Alexis Yager of Rosary had a very solid prelim swim in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:01.34. Valerie Tarazi of Crystal Lake was second in 2:02.53, and Ema Rajic of Urbana U-High was third in 2:02.77.

The 50-yard free was a fast heat with Daria Pyshnenko of Lake Forest taking the heat in a 22.52. Bailey Grinter of Edwardsville was second in 23.09, and Avery Braunecker of Effingham was third with a 23.11.

The 100-yard fly was a close race between Carly Kramer of Plainfield Central and Katie Rentz of Rosary, with Kramer taking the heat in 54.81 over Rentz’s 54.95. Camryn Streid of Rosary was third in 55.64.

The 100-yard free featured a fierce battle with Georgie White of Oswego East and Avery Braunecker of Effingham tying for the top seed with a time of 50.28. Pyshnenko was third in 50.32.

Rosary High followed up their top seed in the 200 medley relay with a strong showing in the 200-yard free relay, with their team of Ye (23.97) Kathryn Mueller (23.57) Yager (23.69) and Ryan (22.90) combining for a time of 1:34.13. Lake Forest were just half a second off to grab second, with the group of Madeline Smith (23.60) Pyshnenko (22.82) Olivia Lomax (24.82) and Lanigan (23.29) posting a time of 1:34.53. Loyola Academy was third with the group of Olivia Andrew (23.79) Coughlin (23.51) Maria Kyle (24.25) and Tierney (23.40) were third in 1:34.95.

Ye dominated the 100-yard back with a solid time of 54.68. She was followed by Audrey Guyett of Saint Charles North who was 55.26, while Emily Ryan of Rosary was a close third in 55.62.

Tarazi followed up her swim in the 200-IM, seizing the first seed in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:02.47. Rajic was second in 1:03.09, while Yager was third in 1:03.43.

The last event of the day concluded with an incredible race between Lake Forest and Rosary, with Lake Forest’s team of Pyshnenko (51.22) Smith (51.04) Haley Nelson (52.14) and Lanigan (50.35) who out touched Rosary’s team of Georgia Young (52.03) Ryan (50.18) Linda Licari (51.67) and Yager (50.91) with a 3:24.75 to Rosary’s 3:24.79. Lake Forest’s time was just off the 2012 state record of 3:24.50, which speaks to an exciting race tomorrow. Loyola Academy’s team of Kyle (52.94) Andrew (50.83) Margaret Guanci (51.81) and Tierney (50.60) was third, posting a time of 3:26.18.

The Illinois High School Girls State Championship will conclude with finals which will take off tomorrow.
