Poolesville High School Sweeps Team Titles at Maryland 1-3A State Championships

The 2019 Maryland 1A/2A/3A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center in College Park, Md.

Poolesville won the boys’ team title for the eighth-straight year with 317 points ahead of Damascus (242) and Patterson Mill (221). The girls’ championship crown also went to Poolesville, who earned their fifth-consecutive title with a final score of 344 ahead of Damascus (281) and Easton (153).

Boys Meet

Poolesville’s Jonathan Ye (25.71), Justin Yi (28.74), Maxwell Chen (23.72) and Kenny Song (21.99) began the meet by winning the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:40.16. Chen later won the 200 IM by a full second in 1:57.85 as the first of only three swimmers in the field to break the two-minute marker.

Damascus’ Cody Kim cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:44.04 to win by 1.5 seconds. His second individual gold medal of the night came in the 500 free, where he breezed past the competition to win by 11 seconds in 4:37.98.

AJ Navaleza of Damascus got his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 59.31 ahead of Governor Thomas Johnson’s Robert Xu (59.33) as the only two competitors to sneak under the minute-mark. Harford Tech’s Mason Young powered home to a two-second win in the 100 back, finisishing in 51.07.

Patterson Mill’s Alan Nguyen splashed-and-dashed his way to victory in the 50 free, posting a quick 22.09 for the win. He proved his sprint talent by also earning gold in the 100 free, clocking in at a swift 47.92. His teammate, Jack Leary, flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall in 51.47.

Sean Lipscomb (23.93), Leary (22.49), Issara Ounnarath (22.19) and Nguyen (21.88) combined to give Patterson Mill a 4×50 free relay win in 1:30.49. Noah Harley (51.78), Leary (49.16), Ounnarath (48.27) and Nguyen (47.82) concluded the boys’ meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in a combined time of 3:17.03.

Girls Meet

Poolesville began their winning ways as the 4×50 medley relay team of Moshelle Borjigin (27.90), Helena Narisu (30.83), Sophie Elliott (28.12) and Miranda Liu (25.73) won in 1:52.58. Autumn Wang (1:01.03) and Rachel Ryan (1:01.18) earned gold and silver, respectively, in the 100 back to add to Poolesville’s point total.

Borjigin cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:54.15 as the first of only four swimmers in the field to crack the two-minute barrier. Her third gold medal of the night came in the 500 free, where she posted a two-second victory in 5:08.25.

Damascus’ Carly Sebring dominated the 200 IM, winning by eight seconds with a final time of 2:03.32. The freshman then went on to win the 100 free, besting the field by 1.5 seconds with a final time of 50.84. La Plata’s Megan Schueller splashed-and-dashed her way to victory in the 50 free with a quick time of 24.39.

Paterson Mill’s Katerina Lomis was the first of the top three finishers to break 60 seconds int eh 100 fly, doing so with a winning time of 58.54. Queen Anne’s McKenzie Hemingway won the 100 breast, getting her hands to the wall the fastest in 1:05.60.

Kaitlyn Hunter (25.33), Veronica Ivanovskaya (26.47), Riley O’Leary (26.75) and Sebring (23.65) combined in 1:42.20 to give Damascus a 4×50 free relay title. Hunter (55.94), Megan Kane (56.66), Sophia Witt (56.42) and Sebring (50.54) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:39.56.

Poolesville dynasty . . 8 titles in a row for the boys and 5 consecutive years for the girls!
