Penn State Swimming Sweeps Emory in Season Opener

Penn State swimming took down Emory in a pair of dual meets on Saturday.  The men won 184-107 with the women taking a 184-115 triumph.

The Penn State men’s and women’s swimming teams swept Emory by scores of 184-107 and 184-115, respectively, Saturday in the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The women (3-0) swept the top-four scoring places in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.) led the way in the 1000 free in 10:17.65, while Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) did the same in the 200 fly in 2:04.54. The Lions also posted the top-four times in the 400 IM, led by Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo (Mexico City) in 4:19.10, but the event was exhibitioned. Gonzalez-Hermosillo also touched first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.37.

Kaitlin Jones (Midlothian, Va.), Casey Fazio (Washington Township, N.J.), and Haley Sinatro (West Hartford, Conn.) led podium sweeps in the 200 free (1:49.90), 200 back (2:03.20) and 100 fly (55.82), respectively. Jones also won the 500 free in 4:36.84, while Sinatro also claimed the 50 free in 24.10. Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Megan Wujciak (Livingston, N.J.) also claimed gold in the 100 breast (1:04.55) and 100 free (51.54), respectively.

On the men’s side the Nittany Lions (1-1) claimed the top four places in the 100 breast and the top three in the 200 free and 100 free. Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) claimed the frees in 1:41.59 and 46.16, respectively, while Andy Schuehler (Camden, N.J.) led the Lions in the 100 breast in 58.31 and also earned gold in the 100 fly (51.71). Tim Maurer was also a double event winner in the 100 (50.64) and 200 backstrokes (1:52.54).

Also picking up victories were Rory Lewis, Matt Grillo (Montreal), Michael Kwasnik (Shelby Township, Mich.) and John Nunez in the 200 fly (1:49.26), 50 free (21.03), 200 breast (2:08.52) and 500 free (4:36.84).

In the diving events, the men went unopposed, as Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) posted the top score in the 1-meter at 292.57 and Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) led the 3-meter at 347.78. Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.) led the women’s effort, placing first in the 1-meter at 292.50 and second in the 3-meter at 255.0.

The Emory University Swimming & Diving programs began the 2015-16 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Penn State University at the Madeline Jude Brown Aquatic Center inside the Woodruff PE Center. PSU defeated both Emory teams at the meet, defeating the men 184-107 and the women 184-115.

On the men’s side, Christian Baker and Mitchell Cooper collected an individual win for the Eagles. Baker won by almost eight seconds in the 1,000 Free with a time of 9:40.76. Cooper took first in the 400 IM with a NCAA “B” Cut time of 4:06.08. Baker also placed second in the 500 Free with a time of 4:40.42. Cooper added a second place showing in the 100 Back with a NCAA “B” Cut time of 50.73 and was third in the 200 Back (1:53.33). Also taking first for Emory in the meet was the 400 Freestyle Relay team comprised of Thomas Gordon, Zachary Chen, Trey Kolleck and Alexander Hardwick with a time of 3:09.11.

Chandler Lichtefeld placed second in the 200 Breast (2:09.17) and Kolleck was second in the 50 Free (21.44) for Emory’s other second place showings. Other third place showings for the Eagles on the day were Oliver Smith in the 50 Free (21.46), Chen in the 100 Back (52.62), Henry Copses in the 1,000 Free (9:56.80) and John Galvin in both the 100 Fly (52.78) and 200 Fly (1:55.59).

For the women, the Eagles won four events with Cindy Cheng winning the 100 Back (57.47), Phoebe Edwardstaking the 400 IM (4:41.46) and the 400 Freestyle Relay comprised of Julia Wawer, Ava Salmi, Claire Liu and Marissa Bergh touching the wall first with a time of 3:34.26. Making her collegiate debut for Emory, diver Emma Watson claimed the 3 meter, 6 dives event with a score of 258.90.

Wawer and Anneliese Kowalsky were the lone Eagles to swim NCAA “B” Cut times on the day. Wawer swimming a 1:52.86 for a fourth place finish in the 200 Free and Kowalsky place second in 100 Breast with a time of 1:04.75. Wawer added a second place finish in the 500 Free, touching the wall at 5:09.97. Other second place showings for Emory were Bergh in the 100 Free (52.35) and Mara Rosenstock in the 1 meter, 6 dives event with a score of 228.98.

Six Eagles finished third in their respective events to round out the top performances for Emory in the meet. Bergh in the 50 Free (24.32), Cheng in the 500 Free (5:10.57), Ellie Thompson in the 100 Back (58.80), Ashley Daniels in the 100 Breast (1:06.41), Elizabeth Aronoff in the 200 Breast (2:23.96) and Meg Taylor in the 100 Free (52.95).

Emory will be back in the pool next Friday for the annual Blue & Gold Intrasquad Meet.
