IRVINE, California, August 21. WHILE defending champion Kate Ziegler of the U.S. lead for the bulk of the race, Australia's Melissa Gorman turned on the afterburners in the final 300 meters and put the mile away in a personal-best 16:01.53.
Gorman cleared her previous lifetime best of 16:03.24, and moved into second in the world rankings behind only Lotte Friis' 15:59.13 from the European Championships.
Ziegler, who won the title in 2006 with a 15:55.01, wound up taking second in 16:03.26 to give herself a second medal this week. She opened the meet with a victory in the 800 free, while her time tonight put her fourth in the world behind Grainne Murphy's 16:02.29.
Chile's Kristel Kobrich completed the podium with a third-place 16:06.57, crushing her previous season best of 16:14.48 and improving upon her fifth-ranked time.
USA's Haley Anderson (16:18.10), Japan's Maiko Fujino (16:19.15), Japan's Chika Yonenaga (16:24.71), Japan's Yumi Kida (16:35.47) and Japan's Yurie Yano (16:41.22) also took top eight spots.
