Open Water Swimming Qualification Process Announced for 2028 Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Aquatics have announced the qualification process for open-water swimming at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Open-water competition will be held in 10-kilometer events for both men and women, with action taking place in the Pacific Ocea at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, California.

Open-water swimming has been allotted a maximum quota of 22 athletes in the men’s and women’s 10k races, and qualification for LA28 will begin at the 2027 World Championships in Budapest. The top-three finishers at the next edition of the World Champs will earn invitations to the 2028 Olympics, along with a male and female athlete from the United States, the host country.

Additionally, the highest-ranked male and female athlete will automatically qualify through the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Rankings. If either of those highest-ranked athletes already qualified through the World Champs, the next-highest ranked swimmer will be selected. The remaining quota places for the Los Angeles Games will be determined by the results of the LA28 Open Water Qualification Event, which is scheduled for the Spring of 2028. The host site and date for that event will be announced in the future.

The field for open-water racing at the next Olympics could expand beyond the 22 quota places for men and women. Athletes who qualify for pool swimming in the 800-meter freestyle or 1500 freestyle will also have the chance to compete in open-water competition.
