8 Meet Records Fall In 10 Event Night At ODACs
By Cathleen Pruden, Swimming World College Intern
Eight meet records fell in night number one of ODAC action. Washington and Lee’s Tommy Thetford figured in on three of those records, including an 18.99 relay split.
Women’s Meet
Washington and Lee claimed the first Conference Title of the weekend as the team of Stephanie Foster, Cassidy Fuller, Sarah Schaffer, and Elle Chancey stopped the clock at 1:35.81 in the 200 freestyle relay. This was faster than Emory and Henry’s meet and open record. Emory and Henry was also under the old record. Michaela Nolte, Jessica Richardson, Marina Moore, and Mackenzie Lingle went a 1:36.39. Randolph-Macon’s Alexis Campbell, Megan Granger, Rachel Leigh, and Sierra Collins finished third (1:40.19).
Elisabeth Holmes improved her own meet record, and slid under the 17 year old ODAC open record (5:03.77). The junior won the title with a 5:03.28. Freshman teammate Jordan Watson claimed second (5:10.07). Randolph-Macon’s Kata Kylliainen and Washington and Lee’s Mara Tynan tied for third (5:12.78).
The Generals then swept the podium in the 200 IM. Emily Rollo posted a 2:06.77, just off her own conference record. Teammates Emma Swabb (2:09.66) and Haylee Rademann (2:11.85) rounded out the top three.
Emory and Henry’s Nolte was crowned champion in the 50 freestyle (23.90). The junior finished one one hundredth under the meet and open record (23.91), and two hundredths ahead of teammate Richardson (23.92). Chancey finished third (24.17).
The order of finish was the same in the final relay of the night-the 400 medley. Rollo, Schaffer, Fuller, and Chancey combined for a 3:52.40, a new meet and open record for the Generals. Richardson, Nolte, Claire Goodrum, and Mackenzie Lingle earned second (3:53.66) for the Wasps. Kyllianinen, Campbell, Leigh, and Collins touched in 4:07.14 for third for the Yellow Jackets.
Men’s Meet
The General men posted a new meet and open record to start their night. Corey Connelly, Andrew Botelho, Jake Burns, and Thetford finished the 200 freestyle relay in 1:22.38, including a staggering 18.99 split from Thetford. Randolph-Macon’s Robert Redenz, Alex Daube, Daniel Whitehead, and Mohamed Saleh finished second (1:25.68). Hampden-Sydney (1:34.25) rounded out the top three with Calvin Charles, Hudson Elmore, John Dickerson, and Ryan Mitchell.
Thetford went on to win the 50 freestyle (19.72), just off his own record from the morning. Either of those times would have placed the sophomore second at last year’s Division 3 NCAA Championships. Saleh finished second (21.00) and Burns (21.48) rounded out the podium finishes.
The Generals took the top six spots in the 500 freestyle. Sam Childress topped the meet record (4:43.75), touching the mall in 4:42.46. Teammates Thomas Agostini (4:45.31) and Austin Jennings (4:46.52) finished second and third.
Randolph-Macon lead the way in the 200 IM. Ivan Fadeyev was the champion in the event with a final time of 1:53.12, while his teammate Robery Redenz touched second (1:55.61). Thomas Ferguson of Washington and Lee finished third (1:56.21).
The Generals took down another meet and open record in the 400 medley relay. Botelho, Trent Babcock, Noah Schammel, and Thetford stopped the clock at 3:23.90. The Yellow Jackets swam despite a morning DQ. Saleh, Josh Carter, Fadeyev, and Whitehead combined for a 3:32.97. Elmore, Dickerson, Conor O’Heir, and Mitchell earned third for Hampden-Sydney (3:46.46).
