Notre Dame Hires NCAA Champion Max McHugh as Assistant Coach

Notre Dame on Wednesday announced the hiring of Max McHugh as an assistant coach. He joins the staff of new coach Michael Norment.

McHugh was a four-time NCAA champion in breaststroke at the University of Minnesota. He coached last season at Colorado College and in 2023-24 at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, both in assistant coaching capacities.

McHugh won four NCAA title, seven Big Ten championships and was a 10-time CSCAA All-American. The 2021 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year won the 100 breast three times in a row at NCAAs and did the breaststroke double at NCAAs in 2021. He swam through Olympic Trials in 2024, finishing 26th in the 100 breast.

McHugh is a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in sports and fitness management administration from Minnesota.

Norment, formerly an associate head coach at Georgia, was hired as Notre Dame’s head coach in June when Chris Lindauer took the women’s coaching job at Stanford.
