Northern Michigan Swimming Sweeps Findlay, Tiffin

The Northern Michigan men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams topped Findlay and Tiffin in a dominating performance Friday night at the PEIF Pool in front of 189 fans.

“We had a tremendous competition, and the pool felt electric,” head coach Heidi Voigt said. “The men and women raced very well.”

The men’s team posted 13 victories while the women’s team won nine events, highlighted by Molly Kearney qualifying for nationals in both the 1- and 3-meter dives.

Marc Perelló and Ryan Knox-Leonard set school and pool records. Perelló clocked in at 26.82 in the 50 breastroke while Knox-Leonard timed in at 52.88 in the 100 IM.

Leonard also set a school record in the 200 freestyle (1:41.84) while Perelló (57.56) claimed the Wildcat top mark in the 100 breastroke.

Joshua Cosgrove set a school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.87 while the 200 freestyle relay of Grantas Dapkus, Benjamin Lindberg, Baris Kancoglu and Knox-Leonard took Northern Michigan’s top billing with a time of 1:27.91.

Crystal Bennett won three events, the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 50 butterfly. Regan Kilburn earned her first collegiate wins in the 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle.

The University of Findlay men and women’s swimming and diving teams kicked off their season on Oct. 2 in Marquette, Mich. against Northern Michigan University and Tiffin University. The women’s team came away with six first place finishes while the men secured two.

On the women’s side, Amanda Stiegal captured first place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (54.95) and 200-yard freestyle (1:59.26).

Emma Barnes had a hand in two wins as she claimed first place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.85) and teamed with Michelle Stefaniak, Jenna Dasher and Meri Cizmar to win the gold in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.32).

Jessica Ward won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.62 and Kaley Holmstrom was the victor in the 100-yard IM at 1:03.58.

Ward also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (59.72), 50-yard butterfly (27.39) and teamed with Holmstrom, Cizmar and Stiegal to take the silver in the 200-yard medley relay (1:51.25).

Barnes was second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:57.85), Stiegal was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle (25.28) and Rachel Farmer finished second in the 100-yard IM (1:06.76).

On the men’s side, Janko Radmanovic won two events to lead the way. He was the best in the 100-yard butterfly (51.35) and 50-yard butterfly (22.82). His time in the 50-yard butterfly set a new pool record.

Radmanovic was also second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.70) and teamed with Diego Santos and Todo Djurovic and Ben Mayer to take the silver in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.09).

Djurovic took second in the 100-yard IM at 55.26, Kaleb Brown was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.35) and Graham Rossi was the runner-up in the 1-meter dive at 182.55.

Cody Craig was second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.47 and teamed with Brown, Alex Matthews and Nick Kaftan to finish as the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:28.90.
