NCSA Junior Nationals: Rachel Naurath Shines

ORLANDO, Florida, March 17. THE first full night of finals at the NCSA Junior Nationals featured some phenomenal short course yard swimming by Nova of Virginia's Rachel Naurath. SwimmingWorld.TV was on hand to capture all the action for a live pay-per-view audience.

Naurath demonstrated some strong versatility after winning the 1000 free yesterday. Naurath came through with a 49.70 for the touch-out triumph in the women's 100 free. She just edged First Colony's Madeline Locus, who took second in 49.78. Badger's Aja Van Hout wound up third in 49.82. Naurath doubled up for her third individual victory of the meet with a 1:57.39 in the women's 200 fly. Nova of Virginia swept the podium in the event as Alison Haulsee (1:57.80) and Emma Nunn (1:57.81) finished second and third.

Long Island's John Wagner cruised to victory in the men's 100 free with a time of 44.32. Lakeview's Clay Youngquist finished second overall in 44.74 after winning the 1000 free yesterday. City of Hornikel's Bjoern Hornikel snatched third in 44.87. Lake Forest's Mitchell Stoehr also cleared 45 seconds with a fourth-place 44.89.

Rebecca Rainer of Virginia won another women's title with a time of 1:00.82 in the women's 100 breast splitting 29.06 and 31.76. Aquajets' Abigail Duncan finished second in 1:01.06, while Patriot's Emily Fogle snared third in 1:01.13.

Curl Burke went 1-2 in the men's 100 breast with Charles Katis taking the title in 55.40. His teammate Kyung Park claimed second overall in 55.76. Fox Valley's Kevin Cordes clinched third in 55.81. Davie Nadadores' Nicholas Manousos also cleared 56 seconds with a fourth place 55.95.

West Coast's Cindy Tran used some really strong underwaters to hold off Blue Tide's Jillian Vitarius, 1:56.16 to 1:56.52. The race proved to be Tran pushing out to a lead off every wall, while Vitarius would begin tracking Tran down until the next wall. Viper Madison Bridges completed the top three with a 1:56.91, also under 1:57.

John Conger of Rockville Montgomery dominated the men's 200 back with a top time of 1:44.03, nearly breaking the 1:44 mark. Georgia Coastal's Preston Jenkins placed second in 1:46.14, while Long Island's John Wagner completed the top three in 1:46.37. Badger's Andrew Teduits (1:46.38) and Quest's Michael Covert (1:46.39) finished just behind for fourth and fifth.

Blue Tide's Matthew Barber snatched the men's 200 fly title in 1:46.98. Curl Burke's Nicholas Tremols claimed second in 1:47.07, while Youngquist grabbed another podium with a third-place time of 1:47.61.

Naurath grabbed another win, this time as part of Nova of Virginia's women's 800 free relay. Naurath, Haulsee, Alaina Brown and Allison Titley won the title in 7:17.90, while First Colony's Meaghan Connolly, Erin Yeager, Jordan Hancock and Madeline Locus finished second in 7:23.18. Rockville Montgomery's Katie Rogers, Emily Ryczek, Maria Watkins and Elizabeth Pepper wound up third in 7:23.22.

Thomas Stephens, Dimitri Higgins, Nathaniel Cuthbert and Robert Anthony of Nova of Virginia took the men's 800 free relay title in 6:39.76. Blue Tide's Matthew Barber, Ryan Glander, William Oswald and Jordan Jones finished second in 6:41.25, while Curl Burke's Bradley Phillips, Nicholas Tremols, Serge Gould and Kyung Park placed third in 6:43.05.
