Women’s Meet:
DePauw’s Angela Newlon powered her way to a staggering 16:29.59 to win the 1650. That swim destroyed Campbell Costley‘s meet record (16:43.71) and is only eight seconds off of Sarah Thompson‘s NCAA Division 3 record (16:21.44). Marysol Arce of Kenyon placed second in 16:42.73. Costley out touched teammate Taylor Johns to finish third in 16:58.39.
Kenyon’s Delaney Ambrosen was just off her morning swim to capture the 200 backstroke with a 2:02.27. Teammate Caitlin Foley finished third (2:05.15), right behind DePauw’s Kirsten Olson (2:05.03).
Senior Hannah Lobb was first to the wall for Kenyon in the 100 freestyle with a 50.63. Denison duo Carolyn Kane and Mary Van Leuven touched second and third in 50.84 and 50.91.
Julia Wilson went three for three on Conference Titles this weekend, lowering her own pool and meet records in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore’s 2:14.90 was well ahead of another Denison duo. Marissa Bednarek and Marisa Pulaski finished at 2:18.23 and 2:18.45 to round out the top three.
Denison’s Hali Garza defended her title and lowered her own pool record with a 2:02.40 200 butterfly. Mariah Williamson of Kenyon finished not far behind in second (2:03.34) while third went to Emily Eben of Denison (2:06.88).
Maria Zarka swept the diving titles this weekend, scoring 483.25 on the three meter board. Denison’s Emma Weber earned 407.55 points. Katie Black of Wittenberg finished third with 384.70 points.
The Denison women put up one last valiant effort in the 400 freestyle relay. Kane, Ashley Yearwood, Kate Wright, and Van Leuven won the event in a 3:22.65, for a new pool and meet record. Kenyon’s Lobb, Abby Wilson, Haley Townsend, and Jenner McLeod finished second (3:24.56). Samma Regan, Jillian Sarazen, Nora Cooper, and Maddie Prangley earned third for Oberlin in a time of 3:34.67.
Men’s Meet:
The 1650 was a tight race between Kenyon’s David Perez and Denison’s Ben Burdick. Perez got to the wall first, finishing in 15:44.06 to Burdick’s 15:47.82. Matthew Hedman of Denison finished third (15:54.11).
Jack Lindell of Denison topped the podium in the 200 backstroke (1:47.89). His teammate Jason Wesseling touched third (1:51.63). Conner Gelwicks finished second (1:49.90) for Wooster.
The nine man championship final of the 100 freestyle was separated by less than a second. It was down to the finish for the top three. By four hundredths, the title went to Joey Duronio of Kenyon (45.08). Denison seniors Ryan Fleming and Conrad Wuorinen swam 45.12 and 45.19. Seven men in this final were seniors, so things should look quite different next season.
Zechariah Banks swept the breaststroke titles this year. The Wabash senior stopped the clock at 2:01.59. Kenyon’s Danny Jurgens finished second (2:02.97). Sam McManus of DePauw was third (2:03.40).
Kenyon freshman Jon Zimdars got to the wall first in the 200 butterfly (1:49.56). Big Red teammates Mitch Williams and Andrew Rich finished second and third with times of 1:49.87 and 1:50.85.
The final event was just as close as expected. Denison finished in a time of 2:59.28, just ahead of Kenyon’s 2:59.76 in the 400 freestyle relay. Stuart Hohm, Fleming, Max Howes, and Wuorinen won it for the Big Red while Duronio, Ryan Funk, Percy Gates, and Alex Seaver competed for the Lords. DePauw’s Kurt Swieter, Blake Lehmann, McManus, and Alex Grissom touched third (3:04.01).
