NCAA Division II Championships: Ann Carozza Smashes 200 Fly National Record; Queens Women Building Lead

At the NCAA Division II Championships in Greensboro, the Queens women have build a lead of greater than 90 points over top rival Drury in the quest for a seventh straight national title. During the third night of racing, Queens saw Danielle Melilli earn a national title in the 100 breaststroke while the team also notched a 2-3 finish in the 500 free before ending the night with a win in the 800 freestyle relay.

The 500 free was actually one of the top races of the day as Wingate’s Kate Agger used a phenomenal come-from-behind surge to claim the win, while the top women’s performance came from West Chester’s Ann Carozza, who took down the DII national record in the 200 butterfly.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Queens sophomore Sophie Lange took over the lead from Wingate senior Kate Agger just after the 300-yard mark of the 500 free final, and Lange extended the lead to more than six tenths with 50 yards to go. But Agger had another gear left, and she dropped from 29.54 to 27.59 on the final 50, out-splitting Lange by a large margin. That allowed Agger to get to the wall in 4:48.02, two hundredths ahead of Lange in 4:48.10.Another Queens swimmer, Monica Gumina, finished well back in third in 4:51.07.

Queens captured its first event victory of the night as Danielle Melilli held off a furious final surge from Indy’s Marizel Van Jaarsveld to win the 100 breast by two tenths. Melilli touched in 1:00.11, just ahead of Van Jaarsveld’s 1:00.32. That brought Queens’ lead in the team competition to 70 points after it was just 30 at the beginning of the night. Women’s 200 Butterfly

One day after West Chester’s Ann Carozza broke the 100 fly national record in prelims but finished second with a slower performance in the final, Carozza saved her best performance for the big moment. She finished just two tenths off the national record in prelims, and in the final, she was well behind Lynn’s Luca Mertins in the early portion of the race, only to catch her rival at the halfway point and then pull away. Carozza finished in 1:55.98, crushing the NCAA Division II record of 1:56.89 set by Queens’ Mckenzie Stevens in 2018.

Mertins took second in 1:57.79, while Drury’s Rafaela Raurich took third in 1:58.98.
