(Race Video) Michael Jensen Scares Tom Shields’ 200 Free National High School Record

Day one of the men’s and women’s AAA Pennsylvania High School State Championships began today. The men’s and women’s 200 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 butterfly and 200 free relay were swam.

Upper Dublin’s senior, Michael Jensen just missed the National High School Record in the men’s 200 freestyle. He clocked in at a 1:33.90 for a gold medal.

This was less than a tenth of a second off of the 2009 National Record of 1:33.83 held by Tom Shields. He did break his own previous PIAA record of 1:35.31 that he set last year. Jensen crushed both his morning time of 1:37.98 and entry time of 1:36.63. He is set to swim at The University of California Berkeley in the fall.

Also medaling in the men’s 200 freestyle is sophomore Jake Sannem of La Salle and North Allegheny’s senior Mason Gonzalez who came in third place with a 1:38.61.

Men’s Meet

Starting the meet off was the men’s 200 medley relay. Winning the event in the time of 1:30.99 was Upper Dublin’s team of Jensen (22.04), Wyatt Amdor (24.67), Devon Polak (23.47) and Alex Flynn (20.81). Upper St. Clair came in second place (1:33.65) with Jack Fitzpatrick (23.65), Kevin Liu (25.15), Braedon Wong (22.25), and Brandon Novak (21.46). In third was Souderton (1:33.53) with Storm Krader (24.30), Ryan Witoslawski (26.95), Brendon Loux (22.65) and Christian Musterait (19.63).

In the 200 IM, Tre Fissella of Hempfield won the event with a 1:50.78. In a close second was Mt. Lebanon’s Brian Ramsey who went a 1:51.00 and Brian McKenrick of Conestoga took the bronze with a 1:51.44.

Greg Brocato of La Salle won the men’s 50 freestyle with a 20.01. Souderton’s Christian Musterait went a 20.32 for silver and Bryson Hunter from Hempfield finished third in a 20.93.

Conestoga Valley’s James Wilson won the men’s 100 butterfly in the time of 48.98. In second place was Upper St. Clair’s Wong (49.39) and third with a 49.83 was Conestoga’s Brendan Burns.

La Salle won the men’s 200 freestyle relay. In the time of 1:21.84, Greg Brocato (20.22), Joseph Vizza (20.63), Sean Finlay (21.07) and Sannem (19.92) took the gold. North Allegheny finished in a 1:23.12 for the silver with the team of Gonzales (20.56), Daniel Songer (21.02), Jack Wright (20.81), Eben Krigger (20.73). Touching in at a 1:25.11 for third place was Mcdowell’s team of Stephan Marn (21.51), Jacob Flemming (21.92), Austin Intrieri (21.50) and Jack Mahoney (20.18).

Women’s Meet

North Penn won the women’s 200 medley relay in the time of 1:43.87 with their team of Megan Zartman (26.40), Erin O’Neill (29.14), Claudia Thamm (24.90) and Leah Brown (23.43). Taking the silver medal was Upper St. Clair (1:45.75) with Maeve Lersch (27.03), Maddie Yoos (29.24), Ynyra Bohan (25.52) and Lindsay Choate (23.96). Mt. Lebanon came in third place finishing in a 1:46.16 and the squad of Emma Graham (27.53), Trinity Ward (29.56), Sophia Donati (25.73) and Angie Gyurina (23.34).

Morgan Scott of Pennridge won the women’s 200 free with a 1:48.87. In second place was North Allegheny’s Lauren McGrath touching the wall in a 1:50.27 and finishing third was Abby Kosic of WC Henderson (1:51.33).

Avon Grove’s Olivia Paoletti took gold the 200 IM with a 1:59.76. North Penn’s Thamm was second in a 2:02.70 and her teammate Kailyn Evans took the bronze with a 2:03.02.

In the women’s 50 freestyle, PARK’s Siena Salvaggio won with a 22.93. Penncrest’s Claire Walsh finished second with a 23.20 and right behind was Muhlenberg’s Mackenzie Gring touching in at a 23.25 for third place on the podium.

Maddie Hart of Haverford won the women’s 100 butterfly with a 53.35. In a close second was Penridge’s Brittany Weiss with a 53.44 and touching for the bronze was Mannheim Township’s Amy Yunginger (55.39).

IN the women’s 200 free relay Pennridge won the event. They took gold in a 1:32.91, breaking the previous PIAA record of 1:33.48, with the team of Hannah Zurmuhl (23.58), Anna Beno (24.14), Weiss (22.92) and Morgan Scott (22.27). North Penn took silver (1:34.88) with Evans (23.87), Erin O’Neill (23.68), Aimee Baur (23.85) and Brown (23.48). Mt. Lebanon was third (1:35.61) with Alison Shapiro (24.26), Hannah Bumgarner (23.91), Emma Buerger (23.99) and Gyurina (23.45).
