Maximus Williamson Repeats as Swimming World Male High School Swimmer of the Year

A year ago, Swimming World recognized Keller High School’s Maximus Williamson as its High School Male Swimmer of the Year. Well, the Texan finds himself in the same situation, as Williamson was the runaway choice for Swimmer of the Year accolades for the 2024-25 season.

In the early stages of his college career at the University of Virginia, Williamson’s repeat selection hinged on his spectacular performance at February’s Texas State Championships. While leading Keller High, Williamson established three national high school records at the 6A championship meet, setting marks in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

Swimming World selects its annual High School Swimmer of the Year awards based on a comprehensive scoring process that rewards athletes for their national ranking, setting national records and for their power-points score. Many thanks to Bob Klapthor for his work in identifying the High School Swimmers of the Year.

Williamson’s record in the 200 freestyle stood out among his three standards, as he touched the wall in 1:30.46. That performance suggests a sub-1:30 clocking is likely in the future, and it was complemented by a 41.54 swim that earned Williamson a state title in the 100 freestyle. His national record in the 50 freestyle was produced on the leadoff of Keller’s 200 freestyle relay, where Williamson went 19.08.

In addition to leading the country in the events in which he set national records, Williamson produced the No. 2 time high school time in the nation in the 100 butterfly, thanks to an outing of 46.27.

Williamson was followed in the Swimmer of the Year tabulation by California’s Luka Mijatovic, from Foothill High School. An age-group record holder in multiple events, Mijatovic set a high school record in the 500 freestyle when he went 4:11.91. Mijatovic, who represented the United States over the summer at the World Championships in Singapore, also had the No. 2 high school time for 2024-25 in the 200 freestyle, where he went 1:32.52.

A feature on Maximus Williamson will be included in the next edition of Swimming World, and that profile will also run on the Swimming World website.
