Maximus Williamson Drops High School Record 1:32.63 in States Prelims
Maximus Williamson set the national high school record on Friday morning in prelims of the Texas high school championships.
Williamson, swimming for Keller High School at the University Interscholastic League 6A championships, went 1:32.63 to set the pace in preliminaries at Austin’s Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
That swim continues the gradual reduction in the national record, trimming .05 off the mark set in 2023 by Florida’s Kaii Winkler. Winkler’s time had undercut Aaron Shackell’s mark of 1:32.85 from earlier that year. The Carmel swimmer had finally broken through the enduring mark set in 2019 by Carson Foster at 1:32.99.
It’s not near a best time for Williamson, though, as the University of Virginia signee went 1:31.37 in December 2023, which set the 17-18 national age-group record.
Williamson was seeded at 1:35.38, the top time in the state. He took down the state record, which had held since 2018 in the hands of Southlake Carroll’s Jack LeVant at 1:33.57.
Williamson went a tamer 44.01 to take the top seed in the 100 free. He owns the national record of 41.84 in that event. He split 18.95 in the 200 free relay to help Keller secure the top seed. He also anchored Keller’s 400 free relay with a split of 43.98, again helping them capture the top seed.
Williamson owns Texas state records in the 200 free, 200 individual medley (1:40.81), 50 free (19.45), 100 backstroke (46.29) and 100 free.
Prelims of the entire UIL slate occurred on Friday. Finals will take place Saturday morning.
