In yesterday’s prelims of the women’s 200 freestyle relay at the 2017 Long Course YMCA National Championships the top three teams were bunched together. In night two finals tonight, none of them could match their prelims times. Third seed Fanwood Scotch Plains rose to the top of the pack. Marlise Moesch, Darlene Fung, Rachel Maizes, and Monika Burzynski touched in 1:47.41 to win the event. Red Bank’s Ginger Hansen, Caroline McGann, Marie Schobel, and Megan Judge were second (1:47.59) while Cheshire rounded out the podium with the team of Alexandra Tyler, Elizabeth Boyer, Mia Leko, and Tara Tiernan (1:47.70).
Creating a trend, third seed Powel Crosley took the men’s National title in the 200 freestyle relay. Carson Burt, Garrison Herfel, Will McCullough, and Charles Leibson touched in 1:35.58. Also dipping under 1:36 was Somerset Hills’ Jack Alexy, Sean Foster, Roo Fenton, and Ryan Carkhuff (1:35.94). Picking up third was Matt Wilson, KJ Losee, Henry Schutte, and Ben Puglessi of Rapid Area in 1:36.18.
Butler’s Camryn Forbes won the 200 backstroke. The IU commit touched in 2:13.57. Fifteen year old Paige Hetrick created a significant gap between herself and the third place finisher. The Bradford swimmer touched in 2:14.45. Ridley Area’s Georgia Apostolu seized third in 2:16.35.
In the men’s 200 backstroke it was Jake Kealy of Wilton leading the way with a 2:03.53. Countryside’s Noah Young finished third in 2:04.20, just edging Hickory’s Ross Dant with a 2:04.39.
A pair of “Megan”s topped the women’s 100 fly podium. Blue Ash’s 16 year old Megan Glass touched in 1:01.03 to grab gold. Earning silver was Countryside’s Megan Sichterman (1:01.70). Finishing third was Mia Leko of Cheshire (1:02.44).
Upper Main Line’s Brendan Burns demolished the field in the 100 butterfly. The 16 year old clocked a 54.50. In a tight race for second Orlando’s Logan Quint touched in 57.13, just .01 before Somerset Valley’s Riley Pestorius (57.14).
New Canaan’s Lizzy Colwell posted a 2:36.82 to win gold in the women’s 200 breaststroke. Megan Bull of Somerset Valley was runner up in 2:37.49. Cheshire’s Boyer topped a trio of 2:38s with her 2:38.48 to finish third.
Door County’s Maxwell McHugh won the men’s 200 breaststroke in commanding fashion. The Minnesota verbal commit went a 2:16.48. He was followed by 14 year old Matt Fallon. The Somerset Valley swimmer went a 2:20.28. In third was Powel Crosley’s Blake Brockman (2:22.41).
After finishing third in the night’s opening relay Cheshire swam well ahead of the women’s 400 medley relay field. Tyler, Lily Kurtz, Leko, and Tiernan combined for a 4:17.88. In 4:20.23 Butler’s Forbes, Brooke Zukowski, Mallory Marzolf, and Taylor Petrak finished second. Fanwood Scotch Plains’ Fung, Maizes, Burzynski, and Moesch (4:20.71) were third.
Lakeland Hills won the men’s 400 medley relay by a solid margin. Justin Yang, Chris Ruhnke, Matthew Luciano, and William Zhang combined for a 3:53.28. Upper Main Line’s Carson Huff, Ben Doyle, Burns, and Kevin Ryle (3:56.39) were second. In third was York with a 3:57.17 and the team of Ted Gunn, Alex Sun, Logan Brockway, and Alec Peckmann.
After night two, Cheshire leads the women’s team scoring with 131 points. In second is York and York County with 108 points, and with a score of 97, Countryside sits in third. Powel Crosley has scored 117 to top the men’s scoring. Somerset Valley (105) is second and Lakeland Hills (99) is third.
