Lincoln Southwest, Creighton Prep Win State Titles At 2016 Nebraska High School State Championships

The 2016 Nebraska High School State Championships concluded today with the girls of Lincoln Southwest (455 points) and the boys of Creighton Prep (430 points) claiming the state titles for the 2015-16 season.

Girls Championships:

Lincoln Southwest kickstarted finals with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Clara Walstad (25.78), Dannie Dilsaver (28.07), Kaitlyn Witt (25.50), and Olivia Calegan (22.04) posted a combined time of 1:41.39 to finish close to seven seconds ahead of the competition.

Alana Palmer of Lincoln Southwest turned in a final time of 1:50.66 to finish first in the 200 free, adding slightly to her prelims time of 1:50.04. Jordan McCullough of Papillion-LaVista finished second with a time of 1:53.10, while Pius X’s Caroline Theil was third with a 1:53.26.

Palmer continued her mid-distance prowess by maintaining her top seed in the 500 free with a 5:03.50 finish for first. McCullough stayed at second with a 5:06.76.

Southwest teammates Calegan and Walstad finished 1-2 in the 50 free. Calegan dashed to a final time of 22.77, the only athlete under the 23-second mark, while Walstad posted a second-place finish of 23.67.

Calegan delivered another swift performance in the 100 free, stopping the clock at a 50.16. Teammate Shelby Mullendore finished second with a final time of 52.66, while Marian’s Olivia Tate was third with a 53.02.

Dannie Dilsaver of Lincoln Southwest flirted with the possibility of a sub-two minute 200 IM, stopping the clock at a 2:00.57. Dilsaver lated added a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.24.

Boys Championships:

The relay team of Caleb Piti (24.17), Brian Magee (26.11), Colin LaFave (22.33), and William Tjaden (20.98) from Creighton Prep grabbed first in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:33.59.

Creighton Prep’s Brandon Abboud grabbed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.31, shaving 2.31 seconds ahead off his prelims time of 1:43.62. Norfolk’s Cameron Carney finished second with a time of 1:43.32, and Lincoln East’s Joshua Roh was third with a 1:44.54.

About claimed his second win of the night in the 500 free, posting a final time of 4:39.77. Elkhorn’s Conner Funke took second with a time of 4:41.99, while Roh finished third with a 4:50.21.

Lance Culjat of Brownell/Concord maintained his top seed in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke with top times in both. Culjat delivered a 1:52.44 in the IM, shaving just shy of two seconds off his prelims time of 1:54.37, while it was a 56.64 in the 100 breaststroke that earned Culjat first.

Grand Island’s Matthew Novinski also kept his spot on the top of the podium in the 100 fly and 100 back. Novinski turned in a quick 50.75 in the 100 fly and a scorching 50.14 in the 100 back.
