Liberty Renton Posts Four-Point Victory Over Sammamish at Washington Girls 2A States

The 2019 Washington Girls 1/2A State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Nov. 16 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

After earning the runner-up spot last season, Liberty Renton High School (268) earned the team title by a narrow four-point margin over runner-up Sammamish (264). La Center’s Hailey Grotte (50 free, 100 free) and Steilacoom’s Alejandra Ruppe (100 back, 200 IM) were the meet’s double-event winners.

The meet began as Sammamish’s Kayla Chenier (28.08), Milan Manfredi (31.45), Jillian Weber (26.93), and Katie Walz (24.36) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in a combined time of 1:50.82, nearly three seconds faster than runner-up Aberdeen (1:53.29).

North Kitsap’s Brianna Hoffman successfully defended her 2A state title in the 200 free, turning in a time of 1:57.78 as the first of only four swimmers to dip under the two-minute barrier. Cheney’s Janie Richards dominated the 500 free, posting a six-second victory in 5:18.99 ahead of Pullman’s Melrose Gilbert (5:24.78).

After finishing second in the 50 free last season, Grotte sprinted to the gold medal this year after clock in at 23.69. Grotte, who is committed to Washington State, proved her sprint prowess by claiming another victory in the 100 free in a quick 51.54. Walz earned silver in both the 50 free (23.96) and 100 free (53.10).

Taylor Bloedorn of Fife dove to first on the 1-meter board for the second-consecutive year with a final score of 340.70, only two points better than Liberty (Renton)’s Eleanor Brecht who posted a score of 338.15 for second place.

Aberdeen’s Annika Eisele flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, defending her title in 57.65 as the first of only two athletes in the field under the 60-second marker. J. Weber took second in 59.41. La Center’s Bryanna Ungs, who earned silver in the 100 breast only a season ago, got her hands to the wall the quickest in the 100 breast after turning in a time of 1:06.07 to finish slightly ahead of Anna Weber (1:06.12) of Aberdeen.

Ruppe led the charge in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:10.67 for the win ahead of ANAC freshman Lindsay Brown (2:11.98). Ruppe, only a sophomore, also won the 100 back as the first of three swimmers to dip under the minute-marker, doing so in 58.07 ahead of Chenier (59.08) and Eisele (59.90).

Liberty Renton’s Shaye Agnew (25.96), Selena Lam (25.15), Keira Pham (25.76), and Keaton Canaday (24.72) posted a one-second victory in the 4×50 free relay over runner-up North Kitsap (1:42.68). Sammamish’s Walz (53.22), J. Weber (55.98), Sierra Rosenow (57.03), and Chenier (53.72) concluded the meet as 4×100 free relay champions (3:39.95).
