On Tuesday afternoon the team from Mount Desert Island won the 2018 Maine Boys Class B state swimming and diving championships with a score of 343 points to Ellsworth’s 326.5 points.
Junior Liam Sullivan led the way for the team, setting two meet records. Sullivan touched in 1:53.66 to win the 200 IM by 11 seconds and dip under the 1:55.77 meet record set in 2013. The breaststroker also chose events that would help the team the most, swimming the 100 backstroke. He still managed a meet record, stopping the clock in 51.99. There he was followed by Cape Elizabeth’s Oliver Kraft (54.43).
Sullivan also led off (46.96) the team’s second place 400 freestyle relay and swam the backstroke leg (24.18) of the winning 200 medley relay.
Ellsworth’s junior Camden Holmes won the 50 freestyle, setting a meet record of 21.16. He swam a 47.35 to win the 100 freestyle. His teammate Richie Matthews won the 100 butterfly in 52.93 and the 100 breaststroke in 59.37. Matthews and Holmes teamed up with Sean Hill and Austin Baron to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.54. That quartet posted a 3:17.68 to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Cape Elizabeth’s Rohan Freedman won the 200 freestyle with a 1:49.33. Morse’s Ben Willertz won the 500 freestyle in 5:06.78.
