Las Positas Women, De Anza Men Claim 2025 CCCAA Coast Conference Titles
The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) conference season wrapped up this weekend, with the state championship meet just under two weeks away. A well fought team battle at the Coast Conference meet, hosted this year at the College of San Mateo, saw the Las Positas Hawks claim the women’s team title while the De Anza Mountain Lions won on the men’s side.
Thursday
West Valley College claimed the opening event on the first night of finals. Kayla Tweed (26.12), Bella Raynes (25.81), Grace Appler and Mia Sickler-Lopez combined for a 1:43.66 in the 200 free relay. A touchpad error made splits incomplete.
Ohlone College claimed the men’s event, finishing just two hundredths ahead of West Valley College. Ryin Ruaboro (21.20), Ray Cillo (20.63), Alex Torjyan (21.70) and Moataz Bayoumi (22.18) held of the Vikings. WVC was anchored valiantly by Liam Rogers, who closed in a 21.30.
The women’s 500 Freestyle was won by Las Positas College’s Makenzie Duffin in a 5:24.95. The men’s event was won by De Anza’s Taesu Yim (4:44.51), who battled with LPC’s Christopher Guidi (4:47.82) throughout the race before ultimately pulling away. Yim’s teammate Joyce Lin won the next event, claiming the 200 I.M. at a 2:11.28, more than seven seconds ahead of second place finisher Kaylee Gooch. Ruaboro brought Ohlone its second title of the night, winning by four seconds in the men’s event at a 1:55.43.
Foothill got a win in the 50 free, as Kaylin Welch stormed to a 24.74. Ohlone’s Cillo took the men’s event in a 21.23. The 400 medley relay was claimed by City College of San Francisco by nine seconds. Serawit Ezra (1:05.25), Sophia Tran (1:07.86), Lian Mar (1:00.91) and Samantha Ng (57.12) combined for a 4:11.14 win. Ohlone took a third event on Night One, winning the men’s 400 medley relay by a half-pool length. Ruaboro (51.09), Cillo (55.90), Bayoumi (53.14) and Torjyan (48.50), the same quartet from the 200 free relay, won in a 3:28.63.
LPC’s Ainsley Wade and Marin’s Ben Lentz swept the one and three-meter diving events, contested a week prior at the NorCal Regional Championships.
Friday
CCSF took another relay on the second day with the women’s 200 medley relay. The combination of Remy Dizon (29.76), Tran (30.95), Mar (26.41), and Ng resulted in a 1:53.76. Ohlone won the men’s event with the same quartet from both relay wins on Night One. Ruaboro (23.53), Cillo (24.86), Bayoumi (23.55) and Torjyan (21.80) added up to 1:33.74.
CCSF won a tight women’s 400 I.M. final. Tran (4:53.78) battled with Gooch (4:53.97), exchanging the lead multiple times before Tran took the win. Guidi redeemed his runnerup finish to take the men’s 400 I.M. at a 4:18.75. Battling valiantly and actually in the lead at the 300-meter mark, LPC teammate Andre Valle removed 14 seconds from his lifetime best to finish in a 4:21.16.
Welch won a second event in the women’s 100 butterfly at a 1:00.63. WVC’s Owen Neitzle swam 50.92 for the win on the men’s side. Duffin won a second event in the 200 freestyle at a 2:02.26. Yim won in a 1:43.10 for the men, meaning both 500 free champions repeated in the 200.
Tran made it a double in the women’s 100 breaststroke, winning in a 1:09.44. Ohlone’s Cillo put up the men’s swim of the meet to take the win in a 56.12. Lin took the 100 backstroke with the sole sub 1:00 swim at a 58.34. For the men, Ruaboro swam to a four second win at a 51.19.
WVC won the women’s 800 freestyle relay in 8:28.06, led by Tweed (2:07.11), Raynes (2:07.71), Athena Campos (2:09.65), and Sickler-Lopez (2:03.59). A costly disqualification hit Las Positas in the 800 freestyle relay with an early takeoff from their third swimmer. De Anza benefitted from the DQ with Yassin Bouali (1:45.94), Taichi Kuramoto (1:56.58), Jeremy Pietila (1:55.06), and Yim (1:44.12) winning in a 7:21.70.
Saturday
Claiming their third victories of the meet in the 1650 free, Duffin (18:43.79) and Yim (16:35.77) swept the longer freestyle events. Sickler-Lopez won the women’s 100 I.M. in a 1:03.38. The men’s 100 I.M. was won by Cillo (52.59), contested for the first time at this meet. He was just 0.07 off of the all-time best conference swim.
Amelia Peyton won the women’s 200 backstroke for Foothill (2:20.98). Ruaboro won the men’s event with the sole sub-2:00 swim (1:59.54). Welch made it three for three in the 100 freestyle, winning in a 55.75. Alvin Chan (46.95) put on a show in the men’s race, with a field leading second 50 of 24.53 to take the win.
Lin won the women’s 200 breaststroke by six seconds in a 2:24.01. LPC’s Jay Jani won for the men by .22 at a 2:11.13. Karla Serafin Medina won the women’s 200 butterfly in a 2:21.79, eight seconds ahead of LPC’s Caroline Guidi. It was a Hawk trio in the men’s 200 butterfly, as Guidi (1:57.18), Lawrence Thomas (1:57.61), & Ethan Santiago (1:58.54) made it a podium sweep.
WVC won the final women’s event of the meet in the 400 freestyle relay. Sickler-Lopez (56.85), Raynes (57.52), Sofia Gaytan (59.49) and Tweed (56.19) won by a half second at 3:50.05. Ohlone College won the men’s 400 free relay with yet again the same squad. Ruaboro (46.01), Cillo (45.83), Torjyan (49.04) and Bayoumi (48.60) combined to a 3:09.48.
A half point difference separated the Las Positas men and West Valley for second heading into the final event, in addition to just seven hundredths on the psych sheet. Ultimately, West Valley (3:11.42) ran away for second place in both the race and the meet, while the Hawks took third (3:14.03).
