Lander Valley Dominates Wyoming Girls 3A High School State Championships

At the 2016 Wyoming Girls 3A High School State Championship, Lander Valley High School won the team’s first state title since 2011, totaling 321 points. Sublette County was runner up with 177 points, just 10 ahead of third place finishers Worland High School.
The meet was close at the start as Riverton’s Kaylie Gopp, Jordan Lewis, Sonsoles Aguayo, and Josie Dike edged Lander’s Maria Kulow, McKenzie Lilygren, Rachel Kauffman, and Abby Hamilton 1:56.11 to 1:56.72 for the win. Douglas finished third with a 2:00.04 from Desirae Layher, Maecie Wright, Elli Wortham, and Rhylee Ramsey.
Lander freshman Olivia Fowler battled Riverton’s freshman Dike for the 200 freestyle title. Fowler came out on top, 2:04.51 to 2:05.64. Fowler’s senior teammate Jenny Nielsen won a close battle for third in 2:05.64.
Lander only won one other individual event on the afternoon as Kuklow stopped the clock in 5:34.13 in the 500 freestyle. Three other swimmers also cleared six minutes. Douglass’ Sheridan Mathis (5:52.06) and Worland’s Kaci Bentley (5:56.23) completed the podium.
Riverton junior Aguayo took home two titles with a 2:11.61 200 IM and a 52.75 100 freestyle. In the 200 IM, Kuklow (2:19.34) and Worland’s Juli Warren (2:19.61) raced to the finish. She was followed by Worland’s Ellyse Russel (53.92) and Sublette’s McKenzie Davison (57.32) in the 100 freestyle.
Worland claimed the 50 freestyle crown in 24.78. Sublette’s Aimee Gray (25.90) and Lander’s Hamilton (26.04) touched second and third.
Newcastle High School senior teammates Mikenna Waggener and Rachel Henkle stood atop the podium together in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:02.67 and 1:03.22. On Henkle’s heels was Folwer in 1:03.34.
Cody High School’s Miranda Williams cracked 1:10 with a 1:09.43 100 breaststroke. Lander’s Lilygren (1:11.26) and Worland’s Warren (1:12.27) completed the top three.
On the diving board it was Sublette senior Shantelle Rule taking the state crown with 383.75 points ahead of Buffalo juniors Kyera Vasco (378.70) and Brooke Sanburn (324.35).
Riverton took a second state title with a 1:43.51 200 freestyle relay, just faster than Sublett’s Gray, Legerski, Natalie Hunt, and Davison (1:43.73). In third (1:45.03) was Worland with the team of Betley, Kristen Collingwood, Warren, and Russel.
In the final event of the day Lander posted a 3:48.40 400 freestyle relay. Worland snagged second in 3:50.07 and third went to Sublette with a 3:54.78.
