Lakeside (Seattle) Takes Washington 3A High School Girls Crown

There was a battle between the top two teams at the 2016 Washington 3A High School Girls Swimming and Diving State Championships. Lakeside (Seattle) took home the title with 244 points, just 10 more than Bellevue. Mercer Island rounded out the top three teams with 188.5.
Bellevue’s Janelle Rudolph, Katherine Duff, Delora Li, and Aneta Qyzga opened the meet with a winning 1:46.48 in the 200 medley relay. The Lakeside squad of Isabel Chien, Hannah Robertson, Amber Chong, and Mengmeng Gibbs turned in a 1:47.67 for second and third went to Roosevelt’s Kate Leary, Emma Lam, Louise Daigneault, and Melissa Funes in 1:49.44.
Meadowdale’s Kelly Morgan edged Seattle Prep’s Cameron Smith for the top spot in the 200 freestyle 1:51.07 to 1:51.48. Sydney Wong of Squalicum finished third (1:52.80). Wong later topped the 100 freestyle in 52.28, just faster than Interlake’s Erin Harvey (52.41). Lakeside’s Caroline Wagner posted a 52.95 for third.
After her runner up finish, Smith broke five minutes (4:58.59) to win the 500 freestyle. Roosevelt’s Mia Syme (5:00.23) and Lakeside’s Nathalie Valdman (5:01.16) touched second and third.
Morgan posted her second win of the night when she stopped the clock in 56.06 in the 100 butterfly. Chien was runner up (56.49) and Bainbridge’s Erin Miller (57.94) earned bronze.
Franklin sophomore Mandolin Nguyen was dominant in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:03.59 ahead of Stanwood’s Karlie Rimat (2:06.72) and Bellevue’s Rachel Jin (2:07.95).
Nguyen followed up for IM dominance with a winning 100 breaststroke (1:03.50). Squalicum’s Yanran Le (1:03.87) was just behind. Stanwood’s Jetlynn Hau (1:04.73) touched third.
After leading off the team’s 200 medley relay, Rudolph claimed an individual victory with a 23.59 in the 50 freestyle. Wagner was also under 24 seconds (23.91). Stadium’s Ashlea Lijar (24.19) finished third. Freshman Rudolph then took home her second gold with a 56.34 100 backstroke. Lakeside’s Chien (57.29) and Timberline’s Hannah Barker (57.42) followed.
Chong, Yasmin Luthra, Caldman, and Wagner combined for a 1:37.71 to win the 200 freestyle relay for Lakeside. Mercer Island’s Annie Pearse, Elizabeth Bailey, Maeve Murdoch, and Sammie Edwards stopped the clock in 1:38.16 for second. Bainbridge’s Erin Miller, Hannah Lee, Carina Laukitis, and Hannah Tonsmann (1:40.04) finished third.
On the one meter board, Bainbridge’s Zora Opelka scored 422.10 points to finish first, just ahead of Lakeside’s Amber Chong (421.70). Bellevue’s Sarah Walsh (399.90) was third.
Bellevue’s Jin, Li, Aneta Wyzga, and Rudolph took home the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.04. Stadium’s Kaycee Simpson, Riley Anderson, Lijar, and Taylor Kabacy (3:33.87) were on their heels. Mercer Island (3:36.06) earned another relay medal with the team of Murdoch, Edwards, Bailey, and Ellie Williams.
