Katie McLaughlin Tops 200 Free at Day Two of 2017 Speedo Grand Challenge
The 2017 Speedo Grand Challenge continued with fast times by collegiate swimmers and Olympians alike.
Vlad Morozov sprinted his way to victory in the men’s splash and dash, delivering a time of 21.91 for the gold. Morozov’s season best sits at a 21.44 from the Russian Championships. Cristian Quintero picked up second with a final time of 22.71, followed by Zach Apples’s 22.85.

Cal delivered a 1-2 punch in finals of the women’s 200 free. Katie McLaughlin led the charge with the only sub-two minute swim, stopping the clock at a 1:59.63 for the gold. Teammate Amy Bilquist was second overall with a 2:00.52, while Mission Viejo’s Ella Ristic took third with a 2:00.99.

Carter Grimes topped the competition in the men’s 400 IM with a top showing of 4:25.88. He improved upon his prelims time of 4:35.77 by close to ten seconds. Ken Takahashi picked up second overall with a 4:27.25, followed by John Larson’s 4:29.30.

The women’s 400 IM was topped by Ashley Neidigh and her time of 4:48.17. Riley Scott picked up a close second with a 4:49.24, touching just ahead of Solie Laughling’s 4:49.48.

Luiz Martinez set a meet record in the men’s 100 fly, posting a time of 53.51 for first. His time takes down his own meet record of 52.85, set earlier in the day. Dylan Carter was second overall with a time of 53.59, while Juarez Ramirez grabbed third with a 54.54.

Amanda Kendall of Canyon Aquatics turned in the top time in the women’s 100 fly, stopping the clock at a sizzling 58.98. Cal’s Farida Osman finished second overall with a time of 59.12, followed by Kendyl Stewart and her time of 59.25.

The men’s 200 back was led by Brock Bonetti, swimming unattached, who posted a final time of 2:01.26. Peter Larson took second with a time of 2:04.58, just ahead of NOVA’s Justin Nguyen‘s 2:05.76.

Bilquist returned to the pool, topping the competition in the women’s 200 back with a final time of 2:12.56. Emma Schanz, swimming unattached, grabbed the silver with a 2:13.82, while Samantha Shelton was third with a 2:15.05.
