The 2018 Oceania Swimming Championships took place this week in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
14-year-old Grace Monahan was one of the stars of the meet as she took home a total of four golds throughout the four days of competition. Monahan, representing Team Hawaii, grabbed gold in the 50 fly (28.09), 100 fly (1:01.84), 200 fly (2:15.38) and 400 IM (4:55.57). Additionally, she picked up a silver medal in the 50 back and a total of eight bronze medals (five relays and three individuals).
Jonathan Rutter of New Zealand was another star of the meet, completing the meet with a total of eight medals. Of his eight, six are gold. Rutter, 22, posted victories in the 100 (1:03.40) and 200 (2:15.54) breast, as well as the 200 (2:04.07) and 400 (4:27.47) IM. He earned a silver medal for his 29.35 finish in the 100 breast.
Hawaii’s Michael Petrides collected multiple accolades throughout the meet, winning the 200 free (1:51.14), earning silver in the 100 free (51.31), and adding five bronze medals to his collection.
The team from New Zealand was dominant throughout the entirety of the meet, collecting a total of 23 gold medals overall, including 8 from the final day alone.
