Joanna Maranhao Sets Up for IM Sweep at 2017 Brazilian Nationals
Day four prelims of the 2017 Brazilian National Championships, also known as Maria Lenk Trophy, saw Joanna Maranhao set herself up for another gold.
Women’s 400 IM
Joanna Maranhao swam well ahead of the competition in prelims of the women’s 400 IM. Maranhao, the Brazilian National Record holder, stopped the clock at a 4:51.54, more than six seconds ahead of the competition.
Florencia Perotti finished second in prelims with a 4:58.01, followed by Bruna Veronez Primati’s 4:59.14.
Men’s 400 IM
Brandonn Pierry Cruz commanded the pool in prelims of the men’s 400 IM, posting the top morning time at a 4:26.80.
Miguel Leite Valente touched second in prelims wit ha 4:29.05, just ahead of Bruce Hanson Cruz’s time of 4:29.26.
Women’s 200 Free
Julia Volkmann held off a tight field of competitors in prelims of the women’s 200 free, grabbing the top seed with a 2:01.06.
Picking up the second and third place seeds were Maria Heinemann and Rafaela Raurich with times of 2:01.32 and 2:01.60 respectively.
Men’s 200 Free
Felipe de Souza posted the fastest time of the morning in the men’s 200 free, stopping the clock at a 1:49.14.
Giuliano Carer Rocco and Fernando Scheffer rounded out the top three with close times of 1:49.62 and 1:49.64 respectively.
Women’s 200 Back
Andrea Berrino topped prelims of the women’s 200 back with a 2:15.37, finishing close to a full second ahead of the competition.
Gabriela Albuquerque touched second overall with a 2:16.32, while Natalia de Luccas qualified third with a 2:17.19.
Brazilian National Record holder in this event, Joanna Maranhao, was not present in the preliminary field.
Men’s 200 Back
Guilherme Augusto Guido nabbed the top seed in the men’s back with a 2:02.34 showing.
Nathan Bighetti qualified close on Guido’s heels with a showing of 2:02.88, good for the second place seed, while Leonardo Alves Santos was third in prelims with a 2:03.39.
Women’s 50 Fly
Daynara Ferreira Paula, the Brazilian National Record holder in this event, posted the top time of the morning in the women’s 50 fly at a 26.74.
Bruna Lemos turned in the only other sub-27 second swim at a 26.90 for the second place seed. Daiene Dias finished third with a 27.40.
Men’s 50 Fly
The top time of the morning in the men’s 50 fly was posted by Nicholas dos Santos. Santos stopped the clock at a 22.80 to pick up the first place seed, just ahead of Henrique de Souza Martins and his time of 22.98.
Guilherme Rosolen rounded out the top three qualifiers with a 23.43 showing.
