Final Session Kicks Off at 2018 Charlotte Ultraswim
The final morning session of the 2018 Charlotte Ultraswim was underway in North Carolina today, with swimmers competing in the women’s 1500 free and the men’s 800 free. The final day of the meet will also feature the men’s and women’s 400 IM and 100 free, which kick off at 11:00am EST, and finals of the 100 free at 1:15pm EST.
NC State’s Ariel Finke took the win in the women’s 1500 free as the only competitor under 17:00 in the finals. Joining her on the podium was Madison Homovich (17:00.28) and Anna Jahns (17:01.45).
Walker Higgins won the men’s 800 free by 4 seconds in 8:17.20. He was followed by Joshua Danhauser (8:21.98) and Daniel Erhlemeyer (8:26.92).
Moving to the 100 free in the late morning session, NC State’s Alexia Zevnik earned the top seed out of the heats with a 55.49, the only woman in the field to swim under 56 seconds. More than a second behind her in second was Abigail Dolan in 56.63, who was followed closely by Megan Moroney (56.69) and local SwimMac star Madison Kennedy (56.74). Zevnik would skip the final of the event, with Dolan dropping 3-tenths from her prelims time to win in 56.30.
In the men’s event, Aaron Greenberg snuck by to grab the top seed out of prelims, just sneaking by Ryan Baker 50.94 to 50.96. NC State’s Coleman Stewart was just .01 back from second place in 50.97, about half a second ahead of teammate Noah Hensley (51.53) to set up for what is sure to be a tight final heat later today. Baker ended up winning the final of the event in 51.18, just off of his prelims time.
In the women’s 400 IM, Makayla Sargent won the event by more than four seconds with her time of 4:48.10. In second was Emily Barksdale (4:52.48) and in third was Carly Cummings (4:53.85). In the men’s event, Frederick Schubert won with a 4:30.01, followed by Mason Revis (4:36.28) and Matthew Otto (4:37.34).
