Erika Pelaez, Kaii Winkler Impressive as NC State Wins Raleigh Rumble

The NC State Wolfpack continued to dominate the Raleigh Rumble on day two. After establishing commanding leads in Friday’s competition, the meet finished with the women winning with 790 points over Ohio State (546) and Virginia Tech (364.5). NC State also had 790 points on the men’s side, with a closer contest for second going to the Buckeyes over the Hokies, 485.5 to 429. Overall, NC State had 1580 to OSU’s 1031.5 and VT’s 793.5

Day two of competition kicked off with the final round of knockout 50s, and NC State won all four strokes for the women. Tyler Driscoll beat out Erika Pelaez in the 50 butterfly, 23.31 to 23.46, and Leah Shackley won the 50 backstroke over Kennedy Noble, 23.55 to 24.13. The 50 breaststroke went to Eneli Jefimova over Ohio State’s Maria Ramos Najji, 26.43 to 27.22, and Cassie Moses claimed the 50 freestyle over teammate Lily Christianson, 22.08 to 22.31.

Pelaez was first in the 200 free (1:44.83), and Noble was the top finisher in the 200 IM (1:56.85). The team of Shackley, Jefimova, Pelaez and Moses finished well ahead of the field in the 200 medley relay in 1:35.02 while Moses, Lily King, Christianson and Pelaez won the 400 free relay in 3:13.23, with Pelaez coming home in a blistering 47.38 split.

Ohio State pulled off a 1-2 finish in the women’s 500 free with Mila Nikanarov going 4:42.52 for the win while freshman Adair Shaw placed second.

NC State’s men won two of the knockout 50s, with Quintin McCarty going 20.88 in the 50 back to beat teammate Hudson Williams (21.13) and Arsen Kozhakhmetov winning the 50 breast over Ohio State’s Ahmed Ismail, 24.03 to 24.24. Kaii Winkler picked up his third win of the meet in the 200 free (1:32.51) while freshman Max Carlsen swam away with the 500 free (4:16.62).

Daniel Diehl placed first in the 200 IM (1:43.45) to round out the individual racing. The team of Williams, Kozhakhmetov, Aiden Hayes and Drew Salls dominated the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:23.63, and the meet concluded with Winkler, Jerry Fox, Salls and Williams winning the 400 free relay in 2:48.26, with Winkler leading off in 41.67.

Matthew Klinge won the 50 fly for Ohio State, clocking 20.37 to beat the Wolfpack’s Hayes (20.46) by nine hundredths. Brendan Whitfield topped the 50 free in 19.11 over NC State’s Fox (19.25).
