Eastern Michigan Wins Third-Straight MAC Championships By One Point
The 2017 MAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Southern Illinois University concluded today.
Eastern Michigan won their third-consecutive MAC team title with 717 points. They beat Missouri State by one point to claim their 34th overall Championship crown.

Missouri State’s Antonio Thomas dominated the men’s mile and won by 16 seconds. The freshman finished in 14:56.02 to set a new pool and league record.
Eastern Michigan’s Kyle Lichtenberg finished second in 15:12.04 and Missouri State’s Minki Kang took third in 15:24.13.
Southern Illinois’ Michael Wolfe (15:27.62), Buffalo’s Charles Barry (15:33.37), Southern Illinois’ Kevin Kluge (15:43.00), Southern Illinois’ Nolan Fahey (15:48.56), and Southern Illinois’ Christopher Cole (15:55.71) completed the top eight.
200 Back
Eastern Michigan swept the 200 back, led by Tosh Kawaguchi. The sophomore finished first in 1:44.73.
His teammates Cole Bateman (1:45.06) and Matan Segal (1:45.86) finished second and third, respectively.
Buffalo’s Hudson Carroll (1:47.00), Miami-Ohio’s James Wray (1:48.06), Southern Illinois’ Alex Crawford (1:48.15), Eastern Michigan’s Ricky Perez (1:48.41), and Buffalo’s Joey Puglessi (1:48.62) rounded out the top eight.
100 Free
Buffalo’s Mason Miller won his third individual MAC title this weekend, this time in the 100 free. The sophomore cruised to first in 44.03.
Southern Illinois’ Andre Luiz Brilhante finished second in 44.56 and Eastern Michigan’s Jake Tyson took a close third in 44.57.
Buffalo’s Eric Jensen (44.73), Missouri State’s Sean Senn (45.07), Missouri State’s Will Brand (45.18), Missouri State’s Michael Mollack (45.71),and Buffalo’s Martin Leigh (45.84) also swam in the A-Final.
200 Breast
Missouri State’s Phillip Willett won a close 200 breast race in 1:57.07, using a strong last 50 to surpass the runner-up to set a new pool record.
Southern Illinois’ Bobby Wood took a close second in 1:57.13 and Missouri State’s Christopher Heye finished third in 1:57.84.
Buffalo’s Garrett Clarke (1:57.95), Miami-Ohio’s Nicholas Wukovits (1:58.37), Buffalo’s Itai De La Vega (1:58.53), Miami-Ohio’s Hutch Blackstone (1:58.57), and Eastern Michigan’s Aaron Hendry (2:01.02) completed the final heat.
200 Fly
Southern Illinois’ Filippo Dell’Olio won the 200 fly by over one second, touching first in 1:45.55. The senior won his second-straight MAC title in this event and broke the league and meet record.
Second place went to Missouri State’s Kacper Cwiek in 1:46.56 and third place went to Eastern Michigan’s Logan Burton in 1:46.98.
Missouri State’s Artur Osvath (1:47.53), Miami-Ohio’s Ross Rybakowicz (1:49.25), Eastern Michigan’s Alexander Arrieta (1:49.35), Missouri State’s Ethan Bresette (1:49.87), and Eastern Michigan’s Hunter Cook (1:51.65) rounded out the top heat.
3m Diving
Eastern Michigan’s Alex Chan swept both diving events this weekend after winning the 3m tonight. The senior won his fourth-straight MAC title in this event with a score of 422.75.
Buffalo’s Troy Birdsall dove to second with a score of 363.30 and Eastern Michigan’s Daniel Gironza took third with 357.20 points.
Buffalo’s Nick Rodriquez (344.70), Eastern Michigan’s Thomas Gillis (337.50), Eastern Michigan’s Noah Galluzzo (326.60), Eastern Michigan’s Peter Rusenas (320.85), and Miami-Ohio’s Ryan Nash (307.10) also dove in the final heat.
400 Free Relay
Buffalo’s Eric Jensen (45.14), Hudson Carroll (45.96), Martin Leigh (44.23). and Mason Miller (43.11) concluded the meet by winning gold in the 400 free relay. They finished in 2:58.44.
Missouri State finished second in 2:59.13 and Eastern Michigan took third in 3:00.32.
