Diogo Ribeiro Wraps Up Record-Breaking Portugal Open With 50 Fly Gold
Diogo Ribeiro concluded his record-breaking meet with victory in the 50 fly and Francisca Martins claimed her second national mark in the 200 free at the Portugal Open.
The 18-year-old stopped the clock at 23.19, 0.23 outside his world junior record of 22.96 set en-route to gold at last year’s World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru.
He led home Ukraine’s Andriy Govorov (23.40) and Gabriel Dias (23.77) for his fourth title of the meet in Funchal.
Ribeiro has rewritten the Portuguese record books over the last four days with new standards in the 50 free (21.87), 100 free (47.98) and 100 fly (51.45).
Ana Guedes won the women’s fly in 26.89.
Martins enjoyed a clear victory in the 200 free in 2:00.05 to cut 0.91 from her own record of 2:00.96 that had stood since July last year.
It followed her Portuguese mark of 56.25 in the 100 free and came 24 hours after she won the 400.
Bernardo Almeida won the men’s four-length race in 1:52.97.
