Nearly 2,000 swimmers including Olympians Matt Grevers, Josh Davis, Rick Colella and Mike Alexandrov will race at the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) 2019 Spring Championships April 25-29 in Mesa, Arizona. Swimmers aged 18 to 97 from across the country will compete in the meet.
Men’s and Women’s 1,650 Freestyle
On the first night of competition, Oregon Masters’ Dan Kirkland set a new National Record in the 70-74 1650 Freestyle. His time of 20:16.24 The previous mark was held by Graham Johnson (20.29.18) and has stood since 2001.
SDSM’s Tony Ralphs (23:03.23) and Frank Williams (24:47.42) provided a one-two punch for their team in the 75 to 79-year-old race. TOC’s William Van Horn was victorious in the 80-84 age group with an overall time of 27:33.61.
Arizona Masters won three age groups in the men’s 1650 including efforts from John Sarikas (16:46.00; 25-29), Doug Friman (17:47.24; 40-44) and Kurt Dickson (17:36.67; 50-54).
Other event winners in the men’s 1650 Freestyle include Larry Wood (19:54.90; 65-69), Karl Tallman (18:43.22; 60-64), Chris Birnbrich (18:16.29; 55-59), Bill Quagliano (18:20.17; 45-49), Michael Malik (18:09.97; 35-39), Michel Heijnen (17:25.25; 30-34) and Ryan Rosenbaum (16:42.87; 18-24).
TOC’s Allison Arnold posted the fastest time of the day (17:42.27) in the women’s race to win the 25 to 29-year-old division. She was followed closely by 35-39 swimmer Ashley Whitney of NASH who finished in 17:43.53. Emily Parker‘s 18:09.37 in the 30-34 race was next, followed by Caitlin Krull (18:15.71) for 18 to 24-year-olds.
More women’s 1650 Freestyle champions include Kristi Lee (18:56.07; 40-44), Alison Hayden (20:19.27; 45-49), Charlotte Petersen (19:21.07; 50-54), Kim O’Grady (19:38.32; 55-59), Bonnie Spivey (19:58.83; 60-64), Christie Ciraulo (20:56.04; 65-69), Joanne Menard (25:03.19; 70-74), Jane Katz (28:36.87; 75-79) and Ann Kay (39:54.69; 85-89).

Men’s and Women’s 1000 Freestyle
In the shortest race of the day – the 1,000 Freestyle – Kirkland won yet another National Title, this time in 11:59.94. Arizona also picked up four more National Titles courtesy of Donald Baker (31:14.66; 85-89), Sean Justice (10:06.86; 40-44), Adrian Kirkpatrick (9:53.35; 30-34) and John Sarikas (9:54.69; 25-29).
The quickest performer of the day, STFL’s Ryan Rosenbaum, was also a double winner on day one. His time of 9:48.95 dominated the 18-24 race. He was joined by Tony Ralphs (13:45.47; 75-79) among double-gold medalists.
Matt Roper (10:55.94; 35-39), Robert Garland (10:27.59; 45-49), Mats Nygren (10:17.24; 50-54), John Sfingi (10:45.48; 55-59), Andrew Bray (10:50.06; 60-64), Larry Wood (12:03.59; 65-69) and Marty Mennen (16:06.32) were also winners in their respective age groups.
The fastest swimmer on the women’s side was Kelsey Hojan-Clark in the 25 to 29-year-old race. She won with a time of 10:25.84. Maddie Sibilia won the 18-24 race in 11:08.26. CMS’ Sara Holman (11:13.74) and Mary Holman (11:22.77) went one-two for 30 to 34-year-olds. The club also earned another win from Heather Wagner for 45 to 49-year-olds.
Ashley Whitney won another event coming in at 10:51.07, as did Kristi Lee in 11:29.46 and Joanne Menard in 15:09.26. Other victories were had by Charlotte Petersen (11:25.00; 50-54), Robin Klestinec (11:39.01; 55-59), Nancy Steadman Martin (12:39.90; 60-64), Carolyn Battin (12:36.94; 65-69) and Ellen Shockro (20:19.72; 75-79).
